Oh, I forgot to mention that she "claims" that she didn't have the painful contractions that they always show on tv. That it felt "funny" and then it was over. I have NO idea how much is true or hormones making her forget, or what. And I've been in hospitals a lot, visiting elderly grandparents. No horrible awful stories or anything. Although once they scheduled my grandpa for a procedure that meant he couldn't eat for a certain amount of time, and then it got canceled, but no one told the nurses, so he get didn't get food for FOREVER. I also have no personal experiences with normal doctors, since I've never needed to go to one. I hope I find a nice one, though.

I want to make soap so much! People are work told me I had to bring some in when it's done! Maybe I can sell it to them. :fl

I had three kids without any painkillers what so ever. I agree with your mom - it really did not hurt.

I admit I was in great shape (I worked out with weights, swam, rode a lifecycle and even rode horses up until weeks before delivery < you would never guess it now>). I found that having my 9 pound 21 inch kids just hard work mostly. Sure there was discomfort, but nothing worse than a few killer periods has brought.

I think if you are healthy and the pregnancy is normal - there should be no "real" pain.

I delivered in a birthing room with a MD all times. I had a "manual" placenta removal one time (that hurt) and needed shots to control bleeding, so I was glad to be at a regular hospital. I managed to go without so much as an IV or oxygen for the first two. Kid three was induced and I was given oxygen, but that is all.

I think many woman have never REALLY worked and have no point of reference for pain.

If you have ever broken a bone - a baby is not that bad
If you have ever been kicked by a horse - a baby is not that bad
If you have ever been thrown into or drug over barbed wire - a baby is not that bad

I could go on but you get the idea.

Lol. I remember my mom said the night before she had my brother she was carrying laundry baskets of clean clothes up a flight of stairs, and the day before I was born that she was up on the counter cleaning out the cupboards, so she remained pretty active until we were outta her. She was telling me this after we had my brother and sister in law over, SIL said she was taking water exercises, was making everyone do everything for her, had her feet up because she said they would get too sore, and was complaining about climbing up 5 stairs, and she still had a couple months to go, and it was irking my mom because no one did anything for her. Not that I can blame her.

Yeah I don't know.. I'll never give birth, so just throwing that out there to make conversation.

My mom says she only felt pregnant (like stereotypical "my feet hurt" "I'm sooo tired") the day I was born. I was a little late, I was supposed to be born on labor day, which was like the 4th that year, (maybe!) and I came on the 9th. But at 7 pounds 10 ounces, I wasn't huge, so it was okay.

A while ago at my work two ladies were preggos at about the same time. The first one kept it to herself until she physically showed, and NEVER complained, or was negative in the slightest. The other one told us the second she knew, would storm into the break room, announce "WHAT IS THAT! EEEEWWW" and run out. She was a month behind the first lady, but she refused to carry anything heavier than a feather. Once she refused to pick something up, and Megan, the OTHER pregnant lady came and picked it up. I know, pregnancies are not all the same, but doesn't attitude count for anything?

(based on this, if I ever had kids, I would have pregnancies from hell, and devil children. I should just keep my mouth shut!)

Oh yeah, the ski to sea. I never really followed that much either. :/

Good luck avoiding soy. It is possible, but sometimes you have to compromise, especially for chocolate! At least you are making your own bread, because it can be hard to find bread that does not have soy in it.

I know this is stupid now, but back when I was preggos I was learning how to shoe horses! Working with a hot forge, a 300 lb. anvil and pounding with a 3 lb hammer. I was cutting bar stock and lifting up horse's hooves. My midwife said that what ever I was doing before I was pregnant I could keep doing in moderation while I was pregnant. I never slowed down. (I even rode my horse, who was very old and gentle...still I know that was stupid.)

I gave birth underwater with no pain killers. Women have been having babies for thousands of years, it is not that big of a deal physically for most of us, we were made to have babies. My mother played tennis way into her 4 pregnancies. (My sister on the other hand...don't even get me started!)

Drakemaiden- I think I'm going to compromise. I want to take out the main contributors. Like the things I eat every day. So my creamer, mayo, vegetable oil, Pam, all need to go. Is corn oil better than soy or canola? And just reading labels more closely. Why is soy in cream of chicken, and cream of mushroom?? Anyway, I read that soy is now 75% of the oil we consume. I think that's really scary considering that even people in Asia considered soy toxic and would not eat it except under extreme circumstances. And even then they went through fermenting processes to kill off the "bad" nutrients. I'll take olive oil, which is even mentioned in the Bible, any day over soy or canola.

BBH- LOL. I watched two videos posted on YouTube. Both by the same woman. First one she gave birth in the hospital, they didn't give her baby to her for like a half hour! Why? Because they couldn't find the ID wrist band. So she curled into a ball and cried the whole time, while her baby was just six feet away, surrounded by doctors so she couldn't even see it! She had problems connecting with her child. The second she had at home, in water. Just watching her face, it's AMAZING the difference. Not to say all cases are this way, or anything. But it is a trend, isn't it? I must admit, the thought of having a baby, and some people telling me I couldn't hold him/her because of PAPERWORK, makes me upset. I'm not saying one is inherently better, and have no personal experience with any of this, but these are things I've observed.

I wouldn't do corn oil either, but it is probably, in some aspects anyway, better than soy. With corn you have to worry about your omega 6 to omega 3 fatty acid ratios. Our diets are way overloaded with corn, (read the Omnivore's Dilema) so we have omega 6 profiles that are quite a bit out of balance with the omega 3's. The bad thing about soy, as I think you know, is the way it imitates certain hormones. Both the soy and the corn will cause health problems in the long run. The reason our food is full of them is that they are a cheap way to feed a large number of people.

I stick with olive oil and coconut oil and butter. Peanut oil is good too. I personally am willing to pay more for oils that I feel safer using. Call it health insurance, if you will.

Olive oil is good stuff, especially the virgin olive oil. It has antioxidants in it that keep it from oxidizing under hot conditions. Herbs like rosemary also have very powerful antioxidants that will keep oil from oxidizing under heat.

Yes, I think it is good to make your own mayo and creamer and those sorts of things. When you find the right recipes they will taste a lot better too. :)

True that. I'm amazed at how naive people are in thinking that the many multi-billion corporations are only in business to HELP the consumer, rather than pad their bottom lines. And I'm the cynical, overly critical, psycho that won't do what's "normal." I've gotten pretty bad at trying to care what my co-workers think of me. The nice ones are interested (like the ones that want me to make them soap) and the close minded ones sigh when I open my mouth.

I've never used coconut oil, does it make everything taste like it came from a Thai restaurant?
