When I was showing horses as a kid, my aunt would always put my hair up for the show in a bun thing at the base of my neck. She never thought it was smooth enough until it was pulled so tight my eyes could hardly shut! :gig

I think I still have the grooves in my scalp from where she "placed" the bobby pins! :barnie  :gig

2dream- You're lucky. The shorter my hair is, the frizzier it is. I envy those pretty bob cuts. My hair would be an afro, and NOT a pretty one! (also-it makes me look crazy) So mine is long, and always braided and out of the way! Except apparently today, when I lost my memory.

Farmfresh- I took ballet for six years, so I can sympathize on the bun issue. Funny thing, I had my hair long, and it never bothered me until I was out of high school. I guess one day my scalp said NO.

Wow ballet! I always wished I could have done that. I took tap and jazz dancing when I was a kid. Ballerinas are always so graceful.

Hennypenny - I admire those PRETTY bob cuts too. Wish mine was pretty. I just got old and don't care anymore.

Us girls are just never satisfied. Mine is stringy straight and I wish it was curly.

Boy do I hear you 2dream!

That is why I am just an old pony tail every day kind of gal. I guess the nerves in my head are as numb as they can be - no headaches for me.

Several years back I worked at an Alternative school.
The kids were always saying "That's not fair!" No matter WHAT you asked them to do.

I got so that I would reply - "Life is not fair ... if it was I'd be beautiful and rich!"

Well it really backfired on me. They had a writing contest and you were supposed to pick a person to receive a beauty makeover. Evidently every kid at the whole school wrote something like "She should win because she is always saying if life were fair she would be beautiful." YACK!! So of course I won and had to ENDURE a beautification makeover AND wear it to school! The only good part was it also included dinner at a nice restaurant and a night at a hotel! Others were saying "You are SO lucky" and " I wish it was ME." Well I wished it was them too, but for the kids sake I went through with it. :/

Just leave me and my old ponytail alone.

The funny thing about me and ballet is... I can't learn from a nice instructor. My first instructor was from England and her favorite saying was "are you dancers, or a herd of elephants??" After her, I had two instructors who were married, and from Austria... They would mutter in German all the time, and if ONE of us messed up, we all had to start over until we all got it perfect. Then they left for the New York Ballet, and we got a super sweet nice teacher. I quit. Now I wish I hadn't, but at the time I was very frustrated. I can't learn from someone who says "good job!" no matter how crappy you were.

Farmfresh- If we ever complained about assignments, they got doubled. Not much complaining from us!

Since I have this massive house that my parent's are trying to get rid of that has tons of space, my mom had brought up old boxes a long time ago. She said she'd go through them, and that they were safer here, than in their damp garage. She never has. So I started to. She has two brothers left, out of something like six. Many died before I was born. Needless to say, she has some old, old stuff.

I'm currently reading my grandma's journal from January, 1944. So far uneventful, but lovely. They lived on Beacon Hill in Seattle. EDIT: No, I don't think they had moved there yet. There is talk of moving, and also mention "Teddy went hunting this morning, and fishing this afternoon" so I doubt they lived in Seattle YET.

Up early (most all start this way). Boys missed bus again. (didn't come up hill) No mail. Russ hauled wood with Molly. Boys helped with supper dishes.

Up late. Bread made. Boys helped with work. Russ and boys played baseball in loafing shed. Boys brought some of old toys down from grainary. Played dominoes. Sunny day.

So cool. The rest must be written by my grandpa because it's in hard to read cursive. And much more precise!

It's 12:00 noon, Sunday, July 22, 1945. We were all up late this morning (catching up on sleep missed this last week). Russell, I, and the twins up at 9:00, Teddy, at 9:30, Johnny, 9:45, and Chuck 10:00. Chores and breakfast done at 10:40. (Milking, feeding calf and horse. For breakfast we had fried bacon and eggs, coffee and milk, bread and butter, and a few trout left from last night, and cupcakes.)

Anyway, it's really sad, because out of all of them, only "the twins" are alive today. My mom wasn't born yet. Still, I'm enjoying it.

Ahhh, just got to this!

Tuesday, August 14 1945

Boys helped in house awhile. Russ to town- brakes relined- $16.50 sox for Teddy, me, Johnny- $2.25 bread, groceries-$2.81 shoes repaired (2 pair)- $4.36 shampoo, bath crystals-$1.11 milkshake $.15
War over!

HP I bet the historical society would love a copy of the journal for their collection. You could contact the one in the area where your grandmother grew up or where they finally located.

Can't get a hold of my mom to ask where they were located in these years, tomorrow I will, because now I'm so curious! I know that my grandma was about 30 years old in 1944. She lived to be 85. I also found her obituary in the same box. Here's one more, if you can stand it! Well, if I can stand it. It's very hard to read cursive, serious! These must be written by my grandma-unless my grandpa baked, and watched the babies...

Wednesday, August 8, 1945

Bill helped Russ put up two loads of crested wheat in stock this morning. After dinner they went fishing. Johnny made some attempt to watch Teddy this morning, but I got little done because I had to watch them so much. Read in paper today about atomic bomb. Difficult and frightening to read-amount of energy needed and given out by this new bomb.

(Teddy is a baby, if you couldn't tell.)

Maybe a historical society would be interested. There's weeks on end where the time and temperature is listed!

Friday December 7, 1945

8* (degrees) 6 am. 34* 1 pm. 5* 9 pm.

Sent order in to Sears. Russ and boys helped me get house ready this evening to practice with orchestra. Ben, Les, Johnny, Slater, and Edna here. Had very enjoyable practice. Improving. Made raised cinnamon rolls. Coffee for midnight supper. Les and Johnny drank milk with the boys.
