Guess all those news reports and interviews were wrong. Or maybe you just didn't see them.

ETA: It seems that giving examples of government taking over car companies proves MY point, not yours. saying "only", still proves that it has been done, whether voluntarily or "justified". Thanks for your help.
I don't watch FOX. I watch news stations. Sorry.

The government is taking over private industry, is firing CEO's and is telling the companies how much they are allowed to pay their executives. The failing auto industry is being told how to make cars, at a loss. This seems fairly straightforward evidence that the government controls private enterprise, rather than the other way around.

As my 10 year old granddaughter would say: DUH.
I believe at this point in time the only industries owned are Chrysler and GM. The help was requested by the CEO's who came to DC with their hats in their hands begging for a bailout. The CEO of GM was fired for incompetence by the majority stockholder. Who just happened to be Uncle Sam. GM is now turning a profit and is expecting to pay their money back 2 years ahead of time. I'm not sure about Chrysler. The government does not control private enterprise. Just the facts Mam.
Ummm........OK.....and exactly how does the government have any power firing anyone in private industry?

Where is that in the constitution?

How about Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac?
How about Amtrak, CREATED by congress in 1970?

And.....if the liberal left gets their way.......the health care system?

And, one could argue that all of the subsidies handed out to farmers every year by the government is giving the government control over them as well.
When a single entity holds 60% of a company they have some say so in how it is run. Beside this is really old news and what does the constitution have to do with it?

You should watch Fox. It is very enlightening.

Yep....that was expected. ;)

Are you saying the constitution has NOTHING to do with it? :th

So, based on your post, you think the government SHOULD have some say in how it is run.....meaning control it. hmmmm...

Here's a number for you: "The bottom 50% pay 3% of all tax collected"

So....don't know where you are getting your numbers.....

I'm just curious about something.

Is presenting facts the same thing as presenting "bait"?:hu

Aren't facts the foundation for a good solid debate?

Regardless, BD, have yourself a good weekend and if I don't talk to you before Christmas, have yourself a joyous Christmas season!

Holy cow, I don't sign on for a few days and look what I find! What a thread.

Lots of interesting issues discussed here (and a fair amount of unproductive bickering), but I will add my two cents to the original question:

So, I wonder if we could calmly and respectfully discuss how or how not a person's politics are related to their desire to be as self sufficient as they choose to be.
To me, politics and self sufficiency don't have a lot to do with one another. Self sufficiency is about me and my family (that's the "self" part); the political arena deals how to regulate (or not regulate) the masses. I just don't see the two issues as very intertwined. And as this forum shows, people from both sides and all through the middle are interested in being more self sufficient, so it does not seem to be particularly related to the political views of one side or the other.

Thanks for the interesting question, M&TG.

Scott

You need to give the full story.

95% of the wealth in this country is held by 5% of the population. So it follows that they should be paying 95% of the taxes too. Instead they are paying 53.25%. Something wrong with that picture.

By the way I only read down to your that's expected answer. I said I didn't want take your bait because you seem to be determined to get this thread shut down.
