Do I recall correctly that you are a student? (Apologies if I am confusing you with someone else). If so, ask every single adult that you know or meet if they need any work done b/c you are trying to earn some money. This time of year, sometimes people will pay to have a winter's worth of dog cr*p cleaned off their backyard grass as the snow melts; fences repaired; barns cleaned out; gutters cleaned; all sorts of things. In a couple months you may be able to find people who want gardens dug over or tilled (esp. if you could find someone to borrow a tiller from, but some people may pay to have you run *theirs*)

Just ask everyone, you never know what may turn up.

Good luck, have fun,

Pat

cant really do the craigslist thing because its just junk... although i'm sure there is tons of junk on there. i might do some ads for some things though...... :/

maybe i'll write something up and post it around... like yard work and barn cleaning. thanks for the ideas and keep em coming.

dress like you're heading to an interview, bring a professional-looking folder (one of those cheapie black/brown school folders would work, just not ones with kittens on them or whatever) and have it full of copies of your resume (and make sure your resume is awesome) and then just walk in to places. even if they don't have help wanted signs. walk in, ask if they're accepting applications, and make friendly banter with whoever you talk to. always leave your resume if they'll take it.

soooo many places don't even bother advertising that they're hiring anymore. if you make a good impression on the employee you hand your resume to, they'll think of you when they're next hiring.

you are just starting the workforce?

then find what "kinda interests" you like medical, animals or whatever and strive to get a full time position. Many have started this way and earned good money thru their lifetimes with promotions etc.

you need to think lifetime job at some point...not just "get money now" cause will not sustain you.

Any friends, etc. in a field you desire? A biz that caught your eye, walk in and chat them up etc.

Buy and sell. Go to the local flea market and set up. The trick is to know what an item sells for and then try to buy it for 1/3 or less of that value. Garage sale season is here soon plus yaou can buy from other vendors at the flea market. Use the classifieds, auctions and put up adds at the local bulletin boards to buy and to advertise what you have for sale.

When I was a kid this is exactly how my Dad did it for many years. We also founds stuff in a drop box. I also have been doing this off and on for years for extra money and a few times did it for extended periods when I did not have job. Gun shows, car shows, bottle shows and antique shows are all good places to sell.

Other things to do is to pick up and sell scrap metal. It is always a cash business and you can make very good money doing it. Baby clothes and toys are another good item to get into. Clothing is good especially as the prices go up. A second hand store is a good idea but you need a large retail space and good sized population to make it work effectively. When I was a kid my Dad would find a wide spot along a busy road and set up. He did quite well some times doing that.

Do not overlook trees and shrubs at this time of year as well.Go to a whole sale outfit and buy a truck load and then set up on a corner and sell out of the back of your truck. I know a few guys who do this and they seem to do all right.

You can also pick for dealers. Find out what dealers are looking for and buy items that they want. keep in mind that a dealer has to at least double their money when buying from you so you have to be careful when buying. Also the price of gas and running around can eat into real profits so you have to buy really reasonable or work on quantities that make it pay.

I have used ebay and unless you have items worth more than $40 it can be more of a pain then it is profitable. Craigslist and other local online classifieds. The local paper is a good place to buy and then sell online and the other way around.

Keep a notebook of names, addresses, phone numbers and what individuals are looking for and what people are selling. If you have this book kept updated, there are times you can make a months worth of wages just talking on the phone. Even if you can not buy an item or you are not interested, write it down. You never know who is or will be.

REMEMBER TO KNOW WHAT AN ITEM SELLS FOR FIRST THEN BUY!

Good luck, I hope this helps. If you need any help in anything particular, feel free to contact me and I will help you out in any way that I can.

While I agree that SOME people can make money this way, I think it's real dangerous advice to give to a younger person and to someone who really needs money (apparently).

Because, you can also LOSE a considerable amount of money doing that.

Even if you have an excellent eye and knowledge. Let alone if you don't.

Some people have both the knowledge and the knack, and can be consistently lucky.

Lots of people can't.

It's like playing the stock market. "Don't invest more than you can afford to lose, and be willing TO lose it perhaps".

COMPLETELY DISAGREE!

There is one rule that if you learn it will make it fool proof. Know what an item sells for first. If you know that then you have no problems. We are also talking to an educated person. I am a firm believer that ANY can do it if you know rule #1.
