Find a cage rat- you know the snake food kind. Strap a critter cam on him and tell him to spy on his brother rats. Promise him freedom from becoming a meal and a cheesy pension. Then let him go.

This is not the cause of the lump, but y'all want to hear a creepy black plastic in the garden story?

My sis mulched with black plastic in her garden one year and she lives up here in the mountains, where the spring and summer is still quite frosty in the mornings. One morning she was out in her garden working along and thought she saw the plastic moving. She kept on working and then started seeing other places in the plastic moving, stood up and noticed ALL of her black plastic was showing some movement......

Curious and a very intrepid gal, she grabbed an edge and tossed back a section.....

...under the plastic was literally hundreds of snakes of all kinds!!!!! They were seeking out the warmth of that plastic over night, but as the day warmed up they were finding it a bit too warm.

How's that for something to keep you up at night? Needless to say, she never used plastic for weed suppression anymore..... :p

Lot's of snakes up in these here hills......

Okay, using a combination of your clever suggestions, I first grabbed my ultrasonic stethoscope and rushed out in the rain to the bump. Under cover of darkness, I listened through the ear pieces, and all I could hear was the faintest noise. It sounded for all the world like music, with an occasional "Argh, matey". I gave up guessing and grabbed my shovel.

A foot down, I hit something hard. Using the flashlight, I discovered what looked like shingles. A roof? A bit more exploring and I found what appeared to be a small air pipe coming from below. I grabbed my digital lipstick camera and lowered it on a fishing line down the pipe, and here is what I saw.
