They have so many different sounds!!! Their signing and chirping is so beautiful The crowing from my little man is just hilarious. I am sure he thinks he is quite manly so don't tell him it cracks me up! :gig

I had my quail outside during the summer. Again, I agree about vit d, but I had to put them in the barn for the winter. Our winds here are so severe, plus it freezes, and I have Raynauds Syndrome, so the more quickly I can get them and the other critters fed and watered in the winter, the better.

good luck with your quail venture.

I am not dealing with quite the level of cold you are. I am originally from Wisconsin so I do have some idea...LOL

Hopefully next year I can have totally outdoor quail. I have a dog kennel that could be converted in to a really cool quail habitat if I use hardware cloth reinforcement all around and install aviary netting on top. For now, I think a "play tunnel" made of hardware cloth with a shaded area and a sheltered area will do these little goobers some good.

OHMIGOSH THEY ARE SO CUTE!!

ok the only (horrible) experience with quail eggs was when i was in Tokyo on biz. i couldnt eat most of the food b/c they sprinkle everything with dried seaweed (horrible allergy).

it was hard to explain over and over so i copped out and told them i was a vegetarian (ME! can you believe it!?!?!?) to limit what i'd order. with all my time on the west coast i just never could do sushi so i'd stick to veggies and rice. but seriously - it was ME. i'd rather eat a big ol hunk of raw pork fat than tofu or any of that 'crazy' stuff.....

so after a hungry week my hosts had a special dinner at a nice restaurant and they made a huge deal of getting me a special dish..just for me... all eyes were on me when they brought me......

a huge block of raw tofu
a piece of BLOWFISH SUSHI
and a raw quail egg that someone broke over top this hellish delight with great flourish and ceremony

inside i was screaming: OHMIGOSH ARE YOU PEOPLE TRYING TO KILL ME!??! BLOWFISH SUSHI!?!? RAW EGGS!!!?!??AHHAHGHGHHGHGHHH

so i did the only thing i could do... i cried out:

ANOTHER ROUND OF DRINKS FOR ALL MY FRIENDS!

nothing but shots for the rest of the night.

;-)
