Just keep in mind if you do anything where strangers come onto your property, make sure you get some type of commercial business/farm insurance to cover any accidents or injuries. If you look around, you could probably find someone who will give the insurance just for the time period that people would be on your property.

Free, Is this who you were talking about?

This is exactly what I was talking about!

mrb, this is something you could get started on now, even before the land is cleared, as it takes so little space. I'd even start asking around for divisions of plants you might start with....from friends and neighbors who are dividing their perrenials. You could get your mother plant beds started now and be a few steps ahead.

Using the land may not be your fastest money maker. I would explore other non-mainstream work and see what you CAN do.

By "fast" I don't think she meant in the next few weeks. I think she meant at some point after they cleared land and built the house....sometime within the next year or so.....mrbstephens? Is that what you meant? And something that allows you to still stay home with the kids?

Consider carefully before you clear too much of the land. Wooded areas have immense value in many ss situations....goats, pigs, maple syrup, wood for fuel, acorns and other foraging, etc. Things you could incorporate into your future ss classes, too.

there is also a great book called "So you want to start a nursery"... which tells you exactly what and how to start in plants. its a GREAT book and has all the contact info for supplies and what not; what kind of licenses you need, etc. and you can find it used on amazon or in the library. it really got me energized.

and if you hurry (depending on your growing season) you can get started with mums from seed and they will be ready for bedding plants in late sept/oct.

:)

If it was me I would invest in a few Chicken Tractors and sell some "Farm Fresh Eggs"! Check out your zoning for this however.

If you sell eggs you can make pretty decent money these days in some areas.

Yup, selling eggs is on the agenda.

Yes, that's what I meant. We'll probably be wiped out after closing on the property and building a house. It'll take time and money to get ourselves set to work on the land.

I'm thinking of pick your own organic produce.
In order to get "organic" certification so that you can sell your produce as such it takes several years of government hoop jumping. It might be worthwhile in the long run, but would not be a money maker for some time.

You're talking about "certified organic." I don't feel the need to become certified. I'll know it's organic and if anyone asks, they are more than welcome to look in my shed. There won't be any chemicals of any kind.
