Hard lard!!

Ok so let me get this straight. As long as I am relatively healthy and take care of myself. This extra padding I carry will actually save me money.

>>>> Lower heating bill.

>>>> Less money spent on warm clothing.

:gig

Sorry, I'm just cracking myself up over here.

HOLY CRAPPERAL!

This thread done blowed up!

Looks like I have a lot of catching up to do. You people ROCK!

And to all that welcomed me, I am honored to be here among you and am sorry I just lurked for so long now. Just kind of the proverbial wall flower. NOW, y'all've done it! I'm never leaving!

Thanks and I'll play ketchup now and be back with more mind tingling (OK probably numbing) questions!

Hi Tom, :frow

I am on my 3rd St. Bernard. :D Sunday I'm getting my 4th, because since Big Jane died Kate has been lonely. The 4th is coming from a family that is moving to TX and can't take him with them.

I told myself that after Big Jane went I wasn't going to get any more large breeds...you know they steal your heart and then they die too soon. I guess I didn't want to listen to myself. :)

Welcome to the forum.

All these folks know what they are talking about. I took freemotion's nutrition class and my daughter's grades improved tremendously. We eat lots of veggies, grass fed meats, raw whole milk and now raw butter, coconut butter/oil etc.

One tip I learned today at the "eat fat lose fat" site is if you have to go out to eat, order salads with vinegar and oil dressing to avoid soy based dressings, or a taco salad with sour cream and guacamole as your dressing.

Hey Wifezilla.... do you have a source for Non Hydrogenated Lard??? All I can ever find is "Partially".
I go to the Mexican grocery store. They carry Faraon Manteca. Faraon also makes a coconut cream with no added sugars. Yummmmmm.

Oh Goody! I love deprogramming

All natural fats are as follows.
Butter
Real non hydrogenated lard and tallow
raw coconut oil

And no way will they make you fat! They can't!
Bring it on! :thumbsup

OK, so butter, I buy Wegman's Unsalted Butter but I really don't know if that is "good" butter.

Still looking for Lard (can't believe I'm saying that. I mean really, all I have to do is look over my shoulder in a miror and, THERE IT IS!)

I looked for coconut oil at the grocer tonight but no luck. Will check the healthfood store.

Thanks for the info.

Nope, Dr. Shari Lieberman, before she died, and most of the researcher of the study of her TLS. I teach it as a 12 week course, but I add concepts from www.westonaprice.com and Sally Fallon's wonderful book, Nourishing Traditions.

Tom, go buy that book. And search whole wheat recipes here on this site. I grind my own wheat now and make traditionally-prepared things like biscuits, pasta, bread, pie crust, etc. But they are a small part of our diet, which is mostly veggies and meats. Traditionally prepared, of course.

I have no problem with ranch dressing on your veggies. I use butter on mine or cook some of them with a few hunks of salt pork. But...no Lite dressings, dump them down the toilet where they belong. Then look up some recipes for some good dressings and make your own. Better yet, get the book mentioned above (lovingly referred to as NT) and learn how to make truly healthy condiments that are also delicious. And cost-effective. And quick!

Skip the veg oils, btw. Maybe a little EVOO or sesame oil or coconut oil, in moderation.
I'll definitely check the book store next week for the NT book and start re-educating myself.

Thank you.

OH! And no heavy cardio excercise to lose weight. It causes starvation.
Instead, moderate all over weight training is best.
But, but, but... according to every mainstream weight loss book and commercial, I HAVE to do 7 - 12 hours of cardio a day to drop weight! :)

Gotcha though. Skip the LONG rides for a while and concentrate more on core strength (I desperately need it anyway)!

I agree with the fats stuff. I am a terrible sugar addict. But when I've had willpower to switch high fat snacks for my sweet treats, I've felt healthier and better overall.

I swapped out lard for shortening. I actually use it quite a bit. I try to buy peanut oil, but my fiance always get canola. Just for marinading meat and for pancakes once a week.
Well, to be honest, I am mostly a carnivore anyway and would rather have a cold piece of meat for a snack over say a candy bar, etc. I have to confess that chips are a major weakness for me.

Also, do you mean that you use shortening now instead of lard or the other way around. A bit confused here (nothing new, I know!)

Good fats: nut oils, olive oil, real butter (not margarine). olives. avocado. fatty fish like salmon and tuna (if you watch out for mercury).

Watch out for "lite" and "guilt-free" crap

To give you an example - tonight's dinner: italian sausage from a heritage pork CSA; homemade potato and leek baked with egg(from our own chickens) chicken broth and parmigianno cheese; and salad greens with homemade vinaigrette. And a glass of red wine. Yummy, tasty, filling. Not huge amounts of carbs, but incredibly satisfying and all *real* food. Because it was satisfying flavor and enough fat and protein, we didn't over-eat and DH's blood sugar didn't spike.

In any case, welcome! .
MMMMMMMMM! I LOVE fish! And I'm stealing that meal plan. Sounds delish (except the wine, I am allergic to something in it (beer too)).

Thanks for the info. Soaking it up!

I think what Farmer Chick said goes for me too. I've lost some weight recently and it seems like I got a lot colder right at the same time. Hubby has recently gained weight and is always feeling warm. It makes perfect sense to me that he has just a tiny layer of ......blubber......

Be glad you have joined us cold chubby people, you have come over to the light side.

Are you feeling at home yet? :welcome

Sorry I was late to the party. I didn't know it was rude to go to bed during a conversation. You can always answer in the morning, right? Some of these threads go on for months, if we stayed up waiting for the conversation to end we'd never get any sleep.:caf
Yes, I now get it why the eskimos seem "fluffy". It is a great insulator!

Yes, I am REALLY feeling at home now. Mind if I take off my shoes and stay a while?

And, see what happens when you decide to just answer in the morning? You get 30 pages to go through!

Loving it though!

I agree with everyone about "lite" "reduced calorie" etc foods
they are replaced with chemicals/salt/sugar to give flavor

BUT my one love---Hidden Valley Lite Ranch Dressing.
YES! That's the one! I also don't really like the "real" dressings but am going to try to retrain my taste buds and see what happens.

Couple of thoughts - have you had a checkup lately to screen for diabetes?

Even if you aren't diabetic, following a diabetic diet can help shed the pounds. If there are foods you really like, the key is portion control.
I have to be honest. Sometimes I wonder about diabetes or pre. When I eat a big meal, I get light headed, gain weight easily now, get very grumpy when i am over hungry, etc. My Mom's sister had it.

*SIGH*. Looks like a Dr visit is in my future. I haven't had any blood work done in 20 years (in the Army).

If the body freaks out at this amount, and gains weight easily, and prefers low carb, then it is a sgn that the endocrine system is messed up.
No doubt! LOL I was in my 40'w before I went low carb. I had high blood pressure, was prediabetic and seriously going down hill. While others I know who low carb can do 100g or carbs without gaining weight or having problems, that ship has sailed for me.

My main "gurus" for my eating plan are Barry Groves, author of "Eat Fat Lose Fat" and "Natural Health and Weight Loss", Drs Mike & Mary Eades, authors of "Protein Power" and "Protein Power Life Plan", Gary Taubes, author of "Good Calories Bad Calories", and the wonderful people at the Weston Price Foundation, which includes "Nourishing traditions" by Sally Fallon.
WOW! Good thing I like reading and learning new things. Looks like the library is going to be seeing a lot mre of me (and lately, there's a lot more of me to see! :D).

Thanks for the info. I'll put it to use.

Especially if you low carb. LOL. It's a lifetime food change. You feel better but there's food you can't eat. I don't know about anyone else but knowing I cannot have something, no matter what it is, even if I don't WANT it, makes me dig in my heels.
I did decide LONG ago that I will NOT completely forbid anything from my food list. Just moderate. I mean, we all have to live life and get some enjoyment even if it isn't the best thing for us, right? As you say, just have to be willing to suffer the consequesces and be honest with yourself and not over do it.

Yes, my meatballs are fine! Thanks for asking!

Awww. I have NO problems with vegetarians! :hugs I cook vegetarian pretty often when one of my DD's friends comes over. I gotta say, eggplant parmesan is pretty dang good!

I know what you mean. I dropped about 40 pounds a few years ago (one good side effect of a nasty divorce). But I can feel the difference too. I used to work outside in a t-shirt in winter, or wear sandals year-round. These days I have trouble motivating to move when it's cold, and I just can't easily get warm. I couldn't decide if it was being a few years older, a few pounds lighter, something else, or more likely a combination of all three. Incidentally, any weight I gain goes to my stomach too.

So welcome, and I'm glad you asked all this! I'm in the midst of dietary changes so it's nice to read that situation directly addressed. :)

And I hope everything gets better for you soon.
I know where you're coming from! I gotta say, I'll take the coldness over the wheezing any day! :)

Please tag along and jump in. I have a feeling it's going to be a long rocky road for me to realign my diet and discard all the misinformation I have accepted all these years!

Hey there BBH! She (Maizy) is my first St B. I've had dogs all my life but she is the bestest one EVER!

My kids and I are getting a bit worried though as she is now almost 7 years old and we know what's coming... Wouldn't trade her for the world though!

I have to admit that I originally joined the group to send Free a PM asking about her class but thought Id just let it all hang out instead! :gig

Oh! And I LOVE guac but it is just "so bad for you" right? ;)

I certainly hope so as I'm sure you're all going to get really tired of me soon as I keep asking questions here and in the other groups! But I really hope not.

Feel free to roll your eyes when you see my name, but just treat me like an annoying 5 year old who just keeps asking "WHY" all the time! :gig

WHEW!!!

I think Im caught up and more confused than ever! :gig

For those that I didnt answer directly, please know that I read every post and appreciate them all and will take them to heart. THANKS FOR THE WARM WELCOME!

Hey Tom, your pup is still young. My first was lost to bone cancer at 9...then I switched (by then 7 year old)Big Jane to a better diet, mostly meat...went raw and then to Wellness and raw bones from the butcher--just easier. Big dog Jane was pushing 12 when she had to be put down last month, and that is pretty old for a St.

Anyway, feed yourself and your pup better and you will both be around for a long time. ;)

Eta: Not implying that you feed her the wrong diet. :)
