HC, the people who write these books and make these documentaries collect and present the info. They use many experts and solid science to back it up. Quite often the smart people are not also good at presenting the information in a way that is accessible to the average person.

Mary Enig was interviewed in one of the clips that WZ posted. I have read many of her articles and her book, Eat Fat, Lose Fat. She was the one who sounded the alarm about hydrogenated fats many years ago and was basically run out of the scientific community. Guess what. She was right.

there are MANY doctors that back the information in this documentary. Are YOU saying the doctors that back it are less intelligent people than the ones that don't?

Oh, maybe you're right. Maybe we should 100% trust what our government has always told us, because they are always upfront and honest with the Americian people. And the USDA and FDA are consumer protection agencies. ....... RIGHT!

While the medical profession got their education courtesy of big pharma (no bias there, right?--it's in their best interest for you to need/take/buy their meds), many people have a desire to know the truth, and there are doctors who do follow outside the big "pharma" box. I have even talked to my drs, who had admitted they only learn what they are taught in school, and that there is a whole spectrum of health care out there that hasn't been explored sufficiently. Lately, there have been an surge of holistic healers.
Here's one, for starters.

And he is a doctor, but not a medical doctor

And for the record, I do see a regular doctor. I just don't take what he says as gospel, and do my own research afterward if something doesn't set right. I also ask many questions.

Please show me where I said that the doctors who back this information are less intelligent than the ones who don't?

No one in this thread said anything about doctors. All I have heard about so far is a comedian who is supposedly an expert on nutrition.

If you are looking for a fight, go look somewhere else. I am asking questions and trying to find out why people are listening to someone who says you can lose weight and be healthy by eating fast food. If there is a legitimate reason, I can be swayed.

I said nothing about the government or trusting them. I don't know whose posts you are reacting to.

Thank you for legitimately considering my questions and giving me a sensible and persuasive answer.

Well, that makes sense.

I just worry when I see people jumping on some bandwagon and putting their health in the hands of someone who may or may not be qualified to advise them.

So you are saying you would rather get your nutritional information from an uneducated person? Why does that seem counter-intuitive to me?
Probably because that isn't what I said.

Educated does not mean smart.

Tom Naughton TESTED A HYPOTHESIS. You do not need to have a stack of papers with lots of letters on them to test something.

He did not just blindly go about it either. He did research on his own. He also states all of his sources and references. It is very easy to verify what he did and how he did it.

Since all the information from the "experts" had done so much harm to me personally, I ended up doing the same thing he did...but my way wasn't as amusing.

I really do not get this attitude that if someone doesn't have a pedigree they can be so easily dismissed. It smacks of snobbery and elitism to me.
Thank you, Wifey, for explaining what I was thinking.

HC, you are only getting a little glimpse of on going conversations about food and diet.....almost like stepping into the middle of an conversation and taking a little snippet out of context.

We are not blindly following what a comedian is saying about eating, but rather we are following a lot of people who are intelligent with diverse back grounds and education who are showing us the data and proving individually and separately the same thing.

Let me go find that you tube Wifezilla gave me.....BRB

Ok here is a link with lots of good info about different people who are sharing similar views on diet:

http://www.sufficientself.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=3951&p=1

Wifezilla posted a few links on one, one is a you tube video which is very eye opening.

One thing that I have come to realize through reading and really, the movie Food inc had a profound impact on me. The government, big agro and pharm are all in bed together. Government subsidizes crops like corn and soy.....and they find ways to cram that GMO crap into any and every manufactured food because it is cheap filler for the manufacturer. Eventually we get sick from it all and need meds. It is a ugly and real cycle. Many of us here are just trying to be healthier not necessarily lose weight. We are eating a nutrient dense REAL food diet rather than processed faux foods that are leading so many down the path to a life time of chronic disease....high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, stroke, arthritis, etc......
