I really do not get this attitude that if someone doesn't have a pedigree they can be so easily dismissed. It smacks of snobbery and elitism to me.
Perhaps, but you have to protect yourself somehow. Am I going to take medical advice from my doctor or from the accountant in the cube next to mine? No method is perfect, but I would play the odds and listen to the one who has been educated in the field I am inquiring about. Would I ask my doctor to do my tax return? Probably not. Is that elitism? According to you, I guess so.

HC, you are only getting a little glimpse of on going conversations about food and diet.....almost like stepping into the middle of an conversation and taking a little snippet out of context.

We are not blindly following what a comedian is saying about eating, but rather we are following a lot of people who are intelligent with diverse back grounds and education who are showing us the data and proving individually and separately the same thing.

Let me go find that you tube Wifezilla gave me.....BRB
Thanks Dace. That was what I was trying to find out.

Asking questions is clearly not encouraged around here.

I think asking questions is encouraged, but you have to understand that people get defensive of their theories and beliefs especially when we are in the minority and believe that the rest of the world needs to be better informed....but we the minority are going up against everything that you were ever taught to be true. It is hard to get your head around it. I think people just get passionate. :hugs

I understand being passionate about something; but usually people who are seriously committed to an idea are able to back up why they believe in it and not just make fun of people who ask questions,or get mad at them. Typically, people who know what they are talking about welcome questions.

Thanks, Dace.

In all fairness, I believe Wifezilla was laughing at what Okie said about consumer protection groups, not at you :)

Yup...that wasn't about you. Okie just cracked me up.

Not sure where you got that chip on your shoulder, but you might want to have the doctor look at it next time to go in for an appointment.

Asking questions is an indication of a chip on my shoulder?

Why don't you just answer my questions instead of assuming you know something about me?

You clearly think highly of this person and his theories. I don't think I am out of line for asking you to explain why.

Tell me what his credentials are and why what he says makes sense. That is all I am asking.

I already listed them. I also provided links and snippets of the movie including interviews with several doctors and nutrition experts WITH PEDIGREES.

"About the Film

Have you seen the news stories about the obesity epidemic? Did you see Super Size Me? Then guess what? Youve been fed a load of bologna.

Comedian (and former health writer) Tom Naughton replies to the blame-McDonalds crowd by losing weight on a fat-laden fast-food diet while demonstrating that nearly everything weve been told about obesity and healthy eating is wrong. Along with some delicious parody of Super Size Me, Naughton serves up plenty of no-bologna facts that will stun most viewers, such as: The obesity epidemic has been wildly exaggerated by the CDC. People the government classifies as overweight have longer lifespans than people classified as normal weight. Having low cholesterol is unhealthy. Lowfat diets can lead to depression and type II diabetes. Saturated fat doesnt cause heart disease but sugars, starches and processed vegetable oils do."

You are criticizing something you haven't even seen yet and information that, like I said earlier, is well documented. The comedian isn't the SOURCE. He is the REPORTER and TESTER of the information and that is what this documentary is about.

If you really want to research where he got his data, "Good Calories Bad Calories" by Gary Taubes is a good start. You can also google "Gary Taubes Lectures" if you don't want to read his book. He has 3 good ones that examine the lipid hypothesis.

Thanks for the info, WZ. I wasn't criticizing so much as being skeptical, which is my nature. Sorry if it comes across as criticism.

I just like to be careful about what I buy into. I am sure you feel the same way.
