I emailed Tom (the guy that did this movie) and got a response! :clap (my email to him is at the bottom)

Hi, Angela --

I'm so glad you enjoyed Fat Head. Three times ... I don't think my own
mother has seen it three times yet.

I'd recommend reading more about statins on www.spacedoc.net, a site
maintained by a former NASA astronaut and doctor who experienced very
negative side effects on them.

I also wrote more about statins in this blog entry:

http://www.fathead-movie.com/index.php/2009/12/14/more-on-alzheimers/

Statins have never reduced the rate of heart disease in women in any
clinical studies. The small benefit of them shows up only in men with
existing heart disease. Women with high cholesterol outlive women with low
cholesterol on average, largely because low cholesterol is a risk factor for
cancer and stroke.

My food log is available on the fathead-movie.com blog in the Helpful Links
sidebar. The specific page link is:

http://fathead-movie.com/content/MyFoodLog.htm

I didn't keep a log for the saturated-fat pigout month since I wasn't
concerned with calories or trying to lose weight, although I did lose
another two pounds. Basically it was all burgers, eggs, bacon, steak,
cheeses, cream, butter, plus green vegetables and a bit of fruit. It's very
common for lipids to improve on such a diet, as it's actually sugar and
starch that drive down HDL and drive up triglycerides. High triglycerides
are much more dangerous than high cholesterol per se.

Best of luck to you and your mother.

Tom

Hi, my name is Angela

We watched Fat Head this week-end. I ended up watching three times. I
loved it and even had my mother come over and watch. She's been on
cholesterol reducing meds for years. I wanted her to see they were actually
doing more damage than good. All my life I'd heard "low fat, whole grains,
that's how you lose weight". This movie was eye opening to say the least.

Anyway, the reason for my email is I would like to see Tom's food journal,
both the first 28 days and also the "saturated fat pig-out" phase. I know
he asked Morgan Spurlock for his journal for Supersize Me, but couldn't get
it. I thought since Tom showed how hard it was to get Morgan's, Tom would
gladly send his.

Thank you in advance,
-Angela

I have had a few quick chats with Tom on a low carb forum. He is a really nice guy. His "day job" is a comedian..and he is very funny...not to mention smart :D

I am also a spacedoc fan. I am on the newsletter list. Spacedoc doesn't post much anymore, but his guest posters and articles on statins he puts up are amazing.

Hmmm- am I going to get my medical information from the medical community or from a comedian on television??

Things to ponder.

Just because he's a comedian doesn't mean he isn't smart, isn't doing research, and isn't worth listening to - especially when the medical establishment is in the tank with the pharmaceutical industry. Better living through pharmaceuticals - I think not.

I'm reading Nina Planck's Real Food, What to Eat and Why, it's along these lines (don't know if it was mentioned earlier in this thread). Great book, and she ties in the Nourishing Traditions book along with the Weston A Price Foundation history - I didn't realize Sally Fallon had founded it - duh! It all makes so much sense, when you really do your own research and tie it all together....

ETA It sounds as though Tom is a wonderful, down to earth fellow, I'd love to chat with him myself someday.

Being smart and doing research are not the same as having credentials. I guess my question is what qualifies this guy as an expert who apparently is smarter than the established medical community, made up of people who, if I am not mistaken, are also smart and have also done research and who have also spent many years in medical school?

What is his degree in? Where does he get his expertise?

Many years in medical schools where big pharma has tremendous influence.

I have had the opportunity to travel with, share hotel rooms with, socialize with, attend lectures with, etc, docs who are involved with providing continuing education for other docs. They started a non-profit educational institute BECAUSE docs get NO useful education in nutrition in med school. They learn to treat sickness, not to promote wellness. And they are conditioned, like the majority of the population, not to think for themselves.

What qualifies Michael Pollan to do his expose on the industrial food systems and bring to light all that's wrong with it? Research. I am not impressed with degrees, I am impressed with intelligence and reason, with real life experience.

So you are saying you would rather get your nutritional information from an uneducated person? Why does that seem counter-intuitive to me?

Educated does not mean smart.

Tom Naughton TESTED A HYPOTHESIS. You do not need to have a stack of papers with lots of letters on them to test something.

He did not just blindly go about it either. He did research on his own. He also states all of his sources and references. It is very easy to verify what he did and how he did it.

Since all the information from the "experts" had done so much harm to me personally, I ended up doing the same thing he did...but my way wasn't as amusing.

I really do not get this attitude that if someone doesn't have a pedigree they can be so easily dismissed. It smacks of snobbery and elitism to me.
