If you happen to see her again, let her know right away that if you cut an apple in half, the exposed half will oxidize from the air. So air causes oxidation, a type of "rust." So she'd better stop breathing right away.

Wow, just wow...

Everyone has hit the various nails on the head, and Pat, wonderful post as usual!

So I'll just add my $.02.

Rust is actually iron oxide, or iron that has reacted to Oxygen. The O in H20 is what causes the iron to rust. Should we then avoid oxygen? :p

ETA: Hehehe Free, great minds :D

Ok... Juice is 95% water...

She is completely mislead about what is giving her bellyaches. I also have Crohn's, and have figured out a LOT of stuff that causes and aggravates it, and it is easy to blame the wrong thing.

Water probably IS giving her bellyaches - and it is probably the Chlorine in it that is doing it. Chlorine is very corrosive to human tissues, and the amount in most municipal systems is enough to do severe damage over time, and to cause indigestion, and bowel pain in someone with Crohn's. It is also enough, on its own, over time, to CAUSE Crohn's disease if you happen to be in a town that uses the high end of the allowable amount, instead of the low end (and many do, because of bacterial problems in the water). Chlorine KILLS LIVING CELLS - which is why it works to kill bacteria, and it does the same thing to the surface cells in your intestines. Repeat exposure means that the surface cells do not have time to regenerate, and the effect can be cumulative, resulting in severe irritation to the intestinal lining.

And I am NOT a nut, I've researched this out and tested it as well, and this conclusion is supported by good science.

We spent two months up at Scout Camp this summer. My husband and most of my kids were on staff there, and one son and I held the business together. I did really well up there with the well water, which they did not chlorinate (I had been drinking bottled water before we left, switched to their water while up there because the bottled water was causing problems). Toward the end, they were ordered to chlorine flush the system, and then to chlorinate the water. I noticed issues immediately with my skin, hair, and digestive system.

When we came back to town, I tried the tap water here again, and it was even worse, because our town is one that uses enough chlorine in the water that you can smell it when you run a bath. I had stomach aches within two days. I started boiling the water, and it has been ok since, though bathing in it still causes problems with my skin and hair.

Bottled water can do it also, because some people are VERY sensitive to the chemicals that leach from the plastic. Yes, it is a minute amount, but if you already have irritation, you can be very sensitive to small amounts, and if bottled water sits around for a while, especially in the heat, then it has a higher concentration of those chemicals in it.

So she's right about part of it, completely wrong about the other part of it. If she boiled tap water for about 20 minutes, that would remove the chlorine and should solve the problem, unless the water in her area had high concentrations of other minerals that did not boil out that she was sensitive to as well.

We are currently looking for property, and one of the requirements is that it have a well, and not be on municipal or county water - and that is why.

Flourine is one of the best things known to help prevent tooth decay.
No. Not really. First of all, flourine is a toxic gas, Flouride is flourine combined with other elements and it isn't helpful at all when added to drinking water.

"The world's largest study on dental caries, which looked at 400,000 students, revealed that decay increased 27 percent with a 1ppm fluoride increase in drinking water. In Japan, fluoridation caused decay increases of 7 percent in 22,000 students, while in the US a decay increase of 43 percent occurred in 29,000 students when 1ppm fluoride was added to drinking water."

The best preventative is a proper diet without refined sugars, fours, and properly prepared (or very little) grains and legumes.

Yes, I know she is a wing nut, I really just wanted to see what you all thought of this weird theory.

Java, I am SOOOOOO with you on this. My brain goes into overload on nutritional information and contradicting advice. I am throwing in the towel. Whole foods and minimal grains and I am happy :tongue

I have enjoyed reading all your thoughts on this
