I tell you what, I started to build the coop at 1000 hrs, and finished it just short of 2345hrs. No design change, material I did change, just couldn't work all that free oak into the weight of the project. When I get my mind set to do something, I often wonder where my mind was when I decided that.
The girls didn't want to go out, tossed out some scratch, wait thats two new things, so I ended up going in and helping them out. I think their now catching on, in and out from time to time, but like to come out when there is some one there to give a chicky call. It also was a bit chilly, but tonight when I checked on them, all were roosted together.
My container was used for Jalapenos (sp) pepper sauce, HDPE food grade. There was a puncture on the top which made un-useable and was taken out of service. That is what I was told, but I still had it tested for residue trace amounts to be sure.
Maybe not G, but I am running off a well. When water tables run low here, its iron filled muddy water. Hence my water system at 6k, pure water. But even on the best days it only produces 180 gallons of clean water. That sounds or looks like a lot, but its not that much.
I learned after my first year here to collect rain water to water my garden whenever possible.
During the dry months here, my well runs low, hence a big ole water system to clean the water.
Thats great iw, mine are doing great, I told G I would take some pics, and I will tomorrow. The camera dried out and seems to be okay...
So here are some pics of my chicken coop.
I have since modified the hen door, I just needed to get them out there, so I got the coop built. The walls are insulted to a R-9 only, and I will get my head around that later as well as venting after I show Pat what I have done.
The run is now attached and is a total of 48 square feet, I need to add wheels to it as well and change the wheel configuration on the coop. I finished the coop first and than went on to build the run. DW helped me transport the chickens from the brooder to the coop (1930 hrs or so), I was hoping to get the brooder cleaned and get the guineas in the brooder. As it was I didn't ask for any help, but I was on a mission to get the run done.
It was almost midnight when I finished the run, I was tired and had burned the minight oil long enough.
I came in, took a shower, and went down to check on the guineas in the brooder. My concern was the level of the heat lamp. But to my suprise, they were still in their make shift brooder.
SO without any tuss, angry and tired as I was, I just got it done.
The coop looks great!! I have some birds right now that look just about the same as yours in size and color. What kind did you get? I forgot.
You know I have been rolling that whole water thing around in my head for a few days. I have been trying to figure out a way to get some gutters on my house. I should really be trying to save water. Even though it is so plentiful, (pipe from the city) right now. It might not always be that way. In the name of SS I think I should make it my goal to accomplish before next winter. Thanks for the inspiration.
Hey, everything looks great! One suggestion though, when the birds get bigger and the weather gets colder you may want to re do the roosting poles and turn the 2x4s (that's what they looked like to me, at least) the other direction so that the wider side is flat. When it gets colder and the birds go to sleep they will better be able to get their bodies over their feet to keep them warm. I put mine that way and never had any problems with frozen toes this past winter!
I guess the turkey came down to visit the chickens, armed with my camera, I started to think, yummy if I had been armed with my .22 rifle.
How about that funky crazy bean tree idea? Once I attached the strings, I will plant the lower side first than the upper side a week and a half later.
I picked this wind spinner up at a show I did last fall, I traded a fire pit ring for it. I thought it would ad some different intrest to my garden. I still have the other raised bed to cover, which will be done in a square style rather than a hoop style like the other. I think adding the crazy bean tree also will look like a rocketship.
Thanks Punkin...
G, golden comets. I try and spend time with them everyday, just to teach them to be friendly. As you can see, its rainy out, no trip up the hill today for your piccies G, but I will tomorrow.
Thanks Lori, I will remeber to get that done in the fall.
