Yep, definitely wood ducks. We have a pair mounted on a beautiful piece of driftwood that my DH killed a couple of years ago. They are beautiful ducks and if you want to attract them you could build them a nesting box just like you would a birdhouse. I'm sure if you googled it you could probably find some plans somewhere. How are the chicks doing? Are they liking their coop? Oh, I also did a potato cage! Thanks for the inspiration and I got your email and sent you a reply! Thanks!

Gee. I've seen enough of your yard and your outdoor cooking to know it's where we are heading for vacation this year. How does August 12th sound?

Aug. 12 looks good!!!

Gas- $60
Vacation on Jays land with the deer, bears and turkeys in the middle of knowwhere, $5 a day.
Swimming in Jays pond with Piranha Blue Gills, PRICELESS.
There are somethings money just can't by. :gig

Sure we'll set your tents up on the other side of my Morel Mushroom patch. Lots of campfire wood, a fresh spring for water, plenty of space to wonder on and surely a lot of cool stuff to look at. Why things seem to change almost daily around here, as long as the weather is good. :weee Also about that time there will be planty of veggies and berries to gather for meals (hence the $5 a day charge) if you want free food, there is plenty to be found in the woods. :celebrate

But it looks like there will be no taters. :hit

Last nights frost was worse than expected, I did cover everything, but the wind had its way on my covers. The cover on the grapes was torn open on one end, the cover on the taters, blown in the pond. With a windchill of 27 degrees last night, I am not sure if the covers would have done much anyway. I have one basket that I planted late just in case of a late frost, so I will still be able to haverst at least 80 pounds. Maybe they will come back????

I am so sorry to hear about your potatoes, that just stinks. :(

Can I ask what you have over that raised bed? Is it like a cover to make a greenhouse effect?

Loons are usually pretty larger than a wood duck, on occasion we see them down here more but they are pretty common up north a ways, I love the sound they make, very mystical.

Yup, them wood ducks are pretty, we found a dead male by our trailer one day, we think we probably flew into the window and knocked himself out, plan to have him mounted.
This spring we had a pair of wood ducks, blue winged teal, mallards, and Canadian geese in the pond in our back yard, sure is nice seeing them all around while being pretty close. The wood ducks even had a nest in the trees but a squirrel knocked the eggs out.

I made that cover this year for several reason and guessed correct for one of the reasons. I used 1 inch by 1/8 steel flat bar, than I added hardware cloth to keep the critters, birds and my family dog out of my strawberry patch. My dog has a taste for strawberrys.

In the fall I will cover the hooped frames with plastic, to protect the strawberrys and to get a good start in the spring. This is my first year with raised beds, so we'll see how they work. I also worked out a way to support them during heavy snow loads.

Great looking ducks. Sorry to hear about the frost. Will they rebound?

So Aug 12th is ds birthday is it ok if we come on the 10th. I have a pretty big 5th wheel so I'll bring my own water. Do you need me to pick anything up on the way??? I'll have to pass through at least 7 states on my way. :D

How are all the fuzzy butts doing???

Aug 10th let me see.... Looks good!!!!

Yes please do a b-line to Albuquerque New Mexico and pick Bugs Bunny up for DD to keep as a pet.

On your way through CO. just outside the springs theres a place call Buckskin Joes, they sell dirt there from a local river by the hundred pound bags, I will take 5 bags. I always wanted to pan for gold, I tried my hand at it a few times. :pop

I think one other basket will make it okay, I am sure they all will at a later time in the season.

So whos coming on the 11th of August, if we're going to do this, might as well have a Shin-Dig. The south taught me a few things about wild women, booze, partys, and crawfish. :hide LOL....

FC- There I was sitting on the dock nursing a bruised nipple, the center of laughter and everyone was picking on me. :hit
Oh my, when my wife had her mole bitten, I showed concern, but inside I was laughing. Than that came out when I said HAHA told ya!!! :gig :lol:

About the taters, thems not just any taters. ( Insert Forrest Gump voice here ) Theres taters for roasting, taters for baking, taters for mashing, and just some general taters. It was my attempt of Forrest Gumps shrimps with...............

Right, I have work to do...
