Catch em out of the mud and keep them in fresh water (set a day or so to allow the chlorine to evaporate). That should allow them to freshen up a bit. If you are not going to eat them you still might turn them into chicken food.

I've heard (but haven't tried) that their carapaces crushed up work for calcium supplementation, like oyster shells. Anyone else know more on this? I know from zoology that its a chitonous calcium phosphate in lobsters.... is calcium phosphate, rather than calcium carbonate, a usable form for chickens?

(Sorry for getting all science nerdy and the thread jack, I feel like it could be useful to know though....)

I bet it would be a good supplement. I would just stew them up and chop them into bits. The hens would take care of the rest!!

Now there is something I didnt think of. Chicken food!! I could catch a bunch of them, and freeze them for winter supplements! Hmmmmmm. Im going to try to get a few, boil and crush them, and see if the hens will eat them. If they do, I might just start freezing a few for winter. Thanks!!

We had those in the ditches in front of the house when I was a kid.
I clearly remember a bunch of us getting together and poking sticks down their holes to try to get them to grab on so we could pull them out and screeeaaammmm. LOL

I don't like them, or any seafood. As far as I'm concerned chicken food is about the only thing they are fit for. :sick

That's not taking away from you all who like to eat that stuff...it's just not good to me.

Well, I got an E Mail from the rescue org this evening....
these beauties need a home------foster or permanent, can you take them?
there are 3 Neubians, they are all females I believe, one all white, one all black and one 'calico' markings, they were found as strays in a neighborhood in Indy, which means they were dumped. and the worst part is whoever dumped them also cut their ears off, all the way next to their head.......... and whoever did this didn't want to be found out, which is why they cut off the ears!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! They need to stay together, as we will place them together..........let me know if you can foster them, as I need to place them soon..............thanks!!!!!
I told her I would foster them...not sure when she will be bringing them. Can you imagine!??? CUTTING THIER EARS OFF!???? OMG! If they were trying to hide where they came from, just take the darned ear tags OUT!! Jeesh! These poor girls. Looks like tomorrow I will get a quick fence up for them. Ummm, I MIOGHT be looking for homes for them...but she said they have to go together....I will let you all know.

I agree!!!! This is not the first time they have found goats in INDY!!
Last year it was a pregnant female...she was down by the time they got her...and they didnt think she would make it. With great foster care...she was put in a sling after the birth of her 2 kids...and given therapy every day, several times. She is now happy and healthy. So are the kids. :) I just hope these 3 are not so scared of people that I have a hard time containing them.
