Bee, have you thought about "offering" him the use of your sheep so he doesn't have to mow and he gets free fertilizer?
I've done even better and offered to rent half of the field....he was not interested. Folks are kind of funny about their stuff around here....very stingy. The whole dog in a manger outlook rules around here.

Thats a new one...I guess its like everyone around here.." whats mine is mine, and YOU cant have it" UGH! Stingies!!
So yesterday I met a woman that raises sheep and goats. She raises a breed called Karakul sheep. Interesting breed. Im not sure of her goat breed.
She came over today and helped me clip Nelly. It took us 2 hours!! Nelly was so well behaved through it all. She layed back in my arms for most of it, then I stood her up, and she let us clip the rest. Now, Albert on the other hand was being a little turd! He was headbutting us the whole time! 24 hours old, and head butting us! It was cute, because he is so small...however, I need to nip that in the bud now! Cant have him butting when he gets bigger. My plan for him is to try and sell him..and if I can't..well..freezer camp it is.
This is Nelly..all clipped. She is so much smaller than I expected her to be!

Oh, and while this woman was here yesterday...she was looking at the boys..and pulled down thier lower eyelids and showed me, the rim of thier eyelids was light pink. She said this meant they had worms. ?? Anyways, when she came back today...she brought Cydectin, and wormed the 3 big boys. Next week..we trim hooves.
NOT looking forward to that! Oh, she also gave me a catalog from a place called pbsanimal health. She said she never uses a vet...and that if I ever have any fears, or issues, I can call her. :D I am so glad I met her. Next week I am going to her farm, so I can see her sheep and goats. I can't waite!!

Cool friend, I might say! :thumbsup I am trimming the Betty's feet this week....not looking forward to that either, J! They always get mad at me if I lay hands on them other than a mild pet on the nose.

Wish I had a good friend close by to show me the ropes with sheeples! :fl

So....what ya gonna do with that bee-e-a-utiful fleece of Nellys? :pop

With scissors???? You all did an excellent job! It looks so smooth and even from the pic. :th

I would send you shipping....... :drool I don't know what I would do with it but it would be cool to pick it, wash it, card it and maybe use it in a quilted lap throw.

It's your very first fleece...you should do something with it! It would be cool if you could turn it into something that you could display..... where are the thread gals when ya need 'em? :idunno

I agree, she looks beautiful! Well... Didn't Albert die of an illness in the last episode of Little House on the Prairie anyway? Sorry!

Determining worms by the eyelids is called FAMACHA, if you google it there are a couple of charts pertaining to it. I'm not sure what Cydectin kills, but without a fecal test to determine what parasites/worms they are, it might be a shot in the dark. Never-the-less.. HOW LUCKY to find an experienced herdswoman!!

Yes, I guess he did...so, maybe FATE is going to catch this Albert as well.
I agree....she seems pretty well schooled in animal husbandry...and I feel blessed in meeting her. Especially since she lives so close! Oh, and she has a friend that raises Pygmys...and she is going to ask her friend about my little ones for me. We are thinking Pebbles might be about 3 weeks from delivery. Woohoo!! More babies...and they will be TINY!! :love Dont you just LOVE spring!??
Free....now dont be jealous...like I said...I DO have 2 more to clip. And, since I cant afford to have someone come in and do it with clippers...scissors it is! LOL Mary is smaller, but has GREAT wool as well. April has a cinnamon colored wool..but its not as long...but VERY curly! Im thinking hers might be bettre suited for pillow stuffing...or felting. :)

4 April 2010

Easter morning....all is quiet. :)

My 2 boys came in from Oklahoma yesterday. With them one brought his GF, and her brother. ( 4 total guests) Then my sister and her SO came out, with thier 2 daughters....and my other son and his wife and 2 kids came out. :D We had a housefull. I cooked a Ham, and potato salad....and we had sandwiches.
It was a great evening. We all went to look at the lambs....and they ooohed and awwwwed over them. I told my grandson to lock the gate on the fence...he has done it several times...so I had great confidence in him. Well...he didnt...and later my sons GF came in and asked...are your sheep allowed out of the fence? Well....ummm...DUH!! THATS why there is a fence!!! I ran out to see Sonny, and April in the yard....Mary just at the gate. Everyone started running. I screamed STOP!!!!!!!!!!! You will scatter them that way. Just walk up there...so one of my boys started walkig up closer....and the sheep went back in the gate! Whew!! Disaster diverted! LOL
Then my grandson started to cry. I told him...it was OK, but that we really need to be more attentive when asked to do something...especially when it comes to the animals. Gave him a hug, and told him to go wash his face. Everythink was OK again. :)
We all talked late into the evening. What a great day!
Today...Easter. What a lovely morning. I am headed out to take care of a friends sheep, who is on vacation. Then back home to start Easter diner. There will be 9 adults here....so I am bakeing a leg of lamb, and a ham. I hope its enough! 6 of the adults are men!
Oh, and when my sons came in yesterday, from Oklahoma....they had a gift for me...
99_cedar_bench.jpg

They made it out of Cedar! Its very sturdy...me and my oldest son sat on it together. :D I just LOVE it!
OK, im off to go feed my animals...and my friends....then I need to get the yeast rolls going, so they will rise in time for dinner.
I hope you all have a BLESSED Easter.
