We ate nettles this year, they are delicious. You pick the tops of the young plants, wearing gloves and once they are wet they no longer sting you. They made a really great addition to soup, similar to spinach but better texture. We really enjoyed them and look forward to eating them again next spring. I read they are not good to eat after they grow larger, which happened in May for the author the article, but in my area, I believe they were really good until June. They have quite a few medicinal properties, so much so that I chose not to consume too MUCH. I know another person who eats nettles raw in a salad. He said once washed they no longer sting you. I did wet and eat a piece to test his theory and it indeed did not sting my mouth, but I prefered the taste of them cooked.

Sd, thanks. I might try them sometime...but I tell ya, after the burning/stinging I got yesterday, I have to admit...it makes me nervous. Maybe next year, when the memory of this is gone.LOL

Dock_leaves.jpg

i dont know how well Dock grows where you are, but thats the leaf you want to look for (it usally grows neer nettles) and i do know at the very least yellow/curly dock grows in the usa
its Dock (rumex) and you pluck a leaf, roll it up so the rough side is down and rub it on your skin (realy mash it in there)
it realy takes the sting out.
if its a bad sting after rubing it with dock, take enough leaves to cover the area, give them a crunch in your hands and then put it over the rash and bangage it on for a few hours.

nettles are everywhere in the uk and where theres nettles theres dock and it works!

oh and dock can also be cooked and eaten
and when steeped and made into a tea its great in baths or drank as a mild muscle relaxant.

ive never had cooked nettles, but nettle tea is very nice and incredibly good for you.

Thanks PinkFox. I just read about Curly Doc/Yellow Doc. And yes, we have it growing all over this place. Hmmmm, I need to research more on this wonderful plant.

Don't use the term "wonderful" for Curly Dock! :somad We have been battling dock in my D1's pasture for years and I can NOT be friendly with it.

Sorry knee jerk reaction! :hide

We have also eaten Russian thistle! You peel the young stalks to remove the thorns and steam it. Tastes like asparagus! The problem with that is that I don't like asparagus. :/

ive fond the best way to get rid of dock is to wiggle it free gently from underground with a pitchfork, if any of the root stays put itll make even more plants for you :p

but honestly, it realy does have alot of uses, ive never had it cooked (like nettle) but the tea and as a muscle rub and bath addition its great, can also be used on animals achey muscles too!
i just like it cause it takes the itch out :)

Woke this morning to the wonderful sounds of PEEP PEEP PEEP!! I have Keets in the bathroom, hatching. So far, 2...out of 6. Hoping they all hatch, and the 5 under the broody buff orp, and then 7 more under my turkey hens. :D Looks like we still have a chance for turkeys for the freezer.
Woke late....almost 8:15. UGH! I need to be in the barn by 8 am to milk. Suzie was NOT happy, and was pacing the fence line bawling at me. Went and opened the barn, fed everyone, and proceeded to milk. Suzie has been a little jumpy the last 2 days. Not sure whats going on there. Her udders are not swollen, red, or hot...( well, warm but its been hot out there) Not sure what is going on with her. Brought the milk inside and got it filtered and in the fridge, then set out to open the coops. Another duck...gone! One of my black ones this time. And, the female Pekin has been attacked. :somad I just can't figure out what is getting in there....the bodies are missing!!
So...I worked out there most of the day to get things shored up better...hopefully well enough. I brought both of the Pekins inside, gave the female a bath and let her clean herself off. They are now resting in the garage. I will leave them in there for a few days, to let her heal. Cleaned up, and put a small roast in the crock, added taters and onions, and carrots. Made some biscuits to go with it. Supper was yummy!! Im headed back out to milk, then I need to make a pan of peach cobbler for the guys at hubbys work.

Sounds like the best way to get it gone - I totally agree. We have three acres of it. When can we expect you and your pitch fork to be here? :p

Isn't it amazing how animals can tell time?
I have always been amazed at that. When the kids were in school... my Golden would wait by the door when the kids came in from school. If one didn't come in, stayed at a friends or something, he would sit there and whine until I made him go outside. He knew 4 kids SHOULD walk in that door.
