SD - you should SOOOO do farm rescues!!! wowza - that could work out beautifully!!!

justy- i remember your free pig - and am still pea green with envy! actually i was thinking about you recently - one of the nearby town's something-something-animal-something is running out of money and they do farm animal rescue stuff. i was going to contact them and volunteer to take a couple of their sweet looking ducks - but they had a big thing on their website about 'forever'homes (i really dont mean that to sound as snarky as it does - zoikes!).... so i figured they would burst into flames if i asked.

then i found out they had a steer also. DANG!

but it does kinda beg the question - for heavens sakes who or why would you have a steer for a pet?

anyway

i kinda feel bad tho about their organization - they are the ones who are gonna need to be rescued soon. i dont know if they contact other agencies or not. but i was thinking that their animals would have it pretty good here - until they either went to the freezer, or usually with our 'extras' we find another home for them. it seems like just as we need to thin the herd a younger family shows up - or someone randomly asks - for just what we have too much of.

except the creepy meats - we always have room for them. ha!

;-)

It is nice they let you use your own discretion. It is good to get something back out of it when you volunteer, we have always found that we got back more than we gave, funny how that works.
We have only had the one pig come through, but they know to let me know if any more comes in :p I also told her we was looking for a few cattle. :drool :D
She told me...be careful what you ask for, it WILL come in...SO I said, specifically, I am looking for Miniature cows. HA! I don't think those will come in, I am not THAT lucky! We don't get donations for feed, so anything that we can "use" helps.

OFG, call them, all they can say is no....right? Our rescue wants all the animals to go to "forever homes" as well....and I look at it this way, the ones we put in the freezer, are here..." forever" sorta. At least untill the "end" HAHA! You just have to watch for those contracts....they can get ya!

yeah - the contracts.. that the thing. we wont allow anyone to randomly show up here - so their inspections are out the window...and hee hee hee we were afraid we'd be setting ourselves up to be picketed or something by one of those angry-animal-rights-groups! ha!

but you're right the only thing they can say is no... hummm....

Thats why I love the rescue I work with. They came once, and that was to deliver the pigs! No random drop in's. They knew from the start, we have a farm...we grow what we EAT...and no, we wont eat them all. ;) You should contact them....heck, if I was closer, I would!

I totally understand forever homes for pet animals, but forever homes for food animals has always seemed ridiculous to me. Then again, I am a hard core carnivore. :hu

So, in knowing today was going to be hot enough to fry an egg on the sidewalk....I rushed out the door at 730 to get everything done. Opened the coops...checked feed and waters...let the goose and HER ducks out...then headed to the barn to open it up and feed, and milk. I really rushed through it all...had everything DONE, in 45 minutes! After putting the milk up, I decided to get in the small garden...I took the water hose with me. I let the water run in the garden while I weeded...then pulled beets. By the time I was finished, I was drenched in sweat. YUK! Took me about 2 hours, but I finished it. Well, mostly. LOL
Cleaned the beets, washed up and changed clothes, and got supper started about noon. I had to get everything finished before 3....I had PT today.Got hubby's lunch all packed and got in the shower, there, all clean and spiffy! Off to PT. Once I got in there, they decided today was going to be just an eval. day, no PT. She manipulated my back and hip just enough to make me sore. :rant Came home, gathered a few eggs, and sold 2 dozen to the neighbor. Just getting eggs, and setting out fresh water, I was soaked again! Im staying inside until 8. I will NOT go back out in this heat....well....ok, yes I will...darn it. I need to go make sure the goats and sheep, and pigs have water. I just want a cool down...ya know, in the 80's?? That's not too much to ask is it!??

So, yesterday another DR app. I am SO OVER all these appointments! This was my Internal Med Dr, for my COPD. He gave me a good clean bill of health...and, I LOST 13 POUNDS! I wasn't really "trying" I think I sweat it off. Plus with this heat, who feels like eating much? :sick
When I got home, I was telling hubby....guess what, the Dr said I lost 13 pounds. He ALMOST said something, that I know would have resulted in him eating PBJ for dinner...but I gave him , "the look" before he could get it out...then he said....well, that's good, right? I mean, were you trying? :gig Gotta love a "trained man"
I didnt have to cook supper yesterday, hubby's work bought dinner. So we ventured into town, and had dinner with "the guys " chicken, tater wedges, cole slaw....from the local deli. It was OK...but I promised to send hubby with a big pan of peach cobbler Monday.
While I was in town, I was talking to a friend I met at the store, she told me that MUTC was having that Role Playing again. So, I went and applied...and next Wednesday through Friday, I will be working with the Military, as a "victim" of some sort of disaster. Its only 3 days, and doesn't pay too well...but, its a little extra cash in my pocket. Im just going to have to rearrange my milking times for those 3 days. I have to be there at 7 am...its a 20 minute drive, and I normally milk at 8 am. Poor Suzie will be confused..I hope this doesn't slow her down too much.
Then I was told in August, there will be another training session, more role playing. I think this other one will be 12 days. $$$ It is a lot of fun, and I am helping to train the military in disaster preparedness. A win win situation I think. :D
I am looking forward to it....the extra money will help getting the water lines laid in before winter....I hope. If nothing else, it will buy winter hay.
I need to get out there and run water to the pigs, 200 ft of hoses to drag before it get too hot. UGH!

 Are you going to be playing a victim of heat stroke? Cool job.

Suzie will probably be very confused - mine are when I change the schedule - but it shouldn't affect the output by much if at all. One day when I had to milk an hour early the goats just looked at me as if to say "excuse me, but I haven't finished this cud yet, go away now" and then I had to drag them to the stand. They are really attached to their schedule!
