We got the carpet and padding removed at sister C's today. We had Slovenian sausages, macaroni salad and the cassata cake for lunch.

We stopped at Barnes and Noble before heading back to the country. I found THE book I want.... The Remains of Company D: A Story of The Great War by James Carl Nelson. This book is about Company D of the 28th Infantry Regiment, US 1st Division. Two of my dad's uncles served in the 28th Infantry, one seriously injured in battle. This book will go into the collection I have of other WWI books I use for genealogy.

We arrived back home to find that Paul was working on the roof. He left without saying whether he is done working or not. He still has the yard cleanup to do, though, so he will be back.

The side walls of the sink hole are starting to fall in. TR and I are making plans for parking if/when the hole gets too large to enter/exit the drive. We could park in the landlord's double drive or on the farm road on the far west of this property.

TR got some of the back yard grass cut, but it was hard and slow work, since the grass is now very high and the mower handle is wonky.

I made potato salad and burgers while TR cut the grass, and we had that for dinner. We tried to watch some of the movie, Cat On A Hot Tin Roof this evening....but didn't finish it.

We're at 61now and thunderstorms are coming tonight. The temp is supposed to be as high as 80 and more thunderstorms for church tomorrow.

TR and I are hospitality hosts for Encounter at 11am at church. No big plans for the rest of Sunday. We were talking about going fishing, but not if there are thunderstorms.

Monday, TR is back on days; and he may end up working an 8-hour shift, instead of the 4 usually worked on a holiday.

Have a fun and safe holiday!

We had sunshine and a great breeze this morning. The Encounter service was packed and was just wonderful.

After church, we met Laurie and Don at The Diner for lunch. We haven't visited with them in months, so it was good to catch up.

The temps are in the 80s today (heat index 84) and the sun has been making intermittent appearances. We have a 70% chance of thunderstorms this evening.

Since being home, TR and I have been washing windows and screens and installing the few screens we hadn't already done.

TR is bummed because he is going to miss the parade tomorrow. I haven't decided one way or the other about the parade, and may stay home. :p

I am making sponge cake today, for strawberry shortcakes later this evening.

Enjoy the holiday and be safe!

MEMORIAL DAY
Monday May 30, 2011

While I made dinner last night, TR cut the majority of the grass in the yard. He said everything north of the main section of the yard, and north and east of the driveway and parking area are still too wet to mow. He finished just before the storm started.

Last night's storm was loud and bright; with boomer that shook the house and that wonderful straight-up-and-down lightening that makes me glad I wasn't out on the lake fishing.

We had to close all the windows on the west side of the house because the rain was coming in. Which is when I realized that the majority of the windows that work (open and have screens) here are on the west side of the house!!

The temp was 62 when the alarm went off; so TR could get ready for work this morning. The sun was already peaking over the eastern horizon as we drank coffee out on the back porch and listened to the world waking up.

As TR was leaving for work, the Amish lumber guys started the bulldozer and headed for the wooded acreage, breaking the quiet of the early morning.

Today's forecast is calling for 92, with a chance of some showers this morning and clearing in time for the Memorial Day parade in the village. :D A great day for flying the Flag.

Our beek friend, Durwood, usually dresses in his WWII uniform and gives a grand speech reprensenting VFW after the parade. Last month his wife, Margaret, left this earthly life, in an extremely short battle with cancer. Durwood seems to be doing as well as can be expected for someone who lost their best friend of 65 years.

TR's fishing buddy, Lloyd, who used to be superintendent of schools here, usually speaks as well. Lloyd's health hasn't been good lately, and I didn't see him at church yesterday, so I am not sure if he will be speaking today either.

In this small rural area, God, Country and our Freedoms will appropriately be *the* topics of any speeches today, regardless of who speaks. Depending on where the parade ends, I may be able to hear the speeches from my front porch.

Later today I will textl my brother, a Vietnam vet, and a nephew, a Marine stationed at 29 Palms.

For me, Memorial Day and the week that follows is all that and more....

Twenty-one years ago today my mother left this earthly life for a better one. And on June 5th, it will be twenty-one years since my father followed her. God knows, I still miss them terribly. Thankfully, though, the passing of time has lessened the pain, and I gratefully remember...

TR, my sisters and I have already gone to the cemeteries and cleaned up the gravesites and planted where planting can be done. Yesterday rememberance services were held, and flags were placed on the graves of our veterans of too many wars.
