It probably slithered into the basement through a crack in the foundation.

We live in an old 1880 farmhouse. I'm guessing that some of the plaster wall fell into the basement recently because now there is a 2 1/2 inch hole in the pantry wall (behind my sugar canister). TR has now filled the hole (after we made sure the snake went back into the basement). There are just too many holes in this house, so there is a possibility that the snake will visit us once again...just in a different spot in the house.
...like I said......

I did NOT need this additional excitement after the death of the oven on bread making day!!

I admire you for putting him back into the basement!

My D1 has a legion of toads that find their way into her basement. In the spring she usually has a toad extraction day, so they can have at least a chance for freedom. Often they come right back to her basement however.

Kel, that would freak me out! You are brave to put him back into the basement......I don't think I would have been that kind!

I didn't *put* it back into the basement, Dace, I let it go back. Let's be honest, I was praying it would just go back into the basement and leave my kitchen and pantry alone!

The basement is dirt floor, the only things down there are some of the landlords' storage, the water tank and the boiler for the steam heat, so it isn't a place we spend any time in. :D The foundation has issues, so even if we took the trouble to remove the snake from the house proper, I've no doubt it would be back soon enough if it wanted.

And the bright side is we have no mice!
