I agree, Auntie. The issue is if you are stuck in the loop of needing ongoing care. Without insurance you cannot get it.

I won't even TRY to get my seizures diagnosed without insurance. They flat out refuse to run any tests.

So it's a trap.

Hey Lady!

I totally get where you're coming from. You have to do what you have to do for you and your family. You have the opportunity to make money and know what you're going to do with it. Financial stability is definitely self-sufficient in my book.

If we as society do not want the government to dictate with our tax dollars how to allocate funds for medicare, medicaid, food stamps, and welfare, then it is up to us as individuals to first ensure that we are not a drain on the system ourselves. Then we as individuals need to decide how we can help other people. That may be offering to take in a 15 year old teenager and feed, clothe, and love them as our own. It may mean giving a lift to someone who has a flat tire and is stranded. It may mean bringing eggs and veggies to the elderly couple next door. It means a lot of things. The American dream was always about having the freedom to exercise personal responsibility and taking it upon ourselves to care for others who couldn't. It's not the governments job.

This mess our country is in is not going to get solved in DC. It is going to get solved in our neighborhoods and communities. It is solved by taking a stand and taking action to better things for ourselves, our families, and for others around us. It means not waiting for someone else to solve our problems. We need to decide to fix the problems that are within our reach.

So, sorry to preach a sermon to the choir but you're doing exactly as you need to. If you didn't have your job, would you financially have been able to care for your cousin? Will you continue to give more as you are able? To whom much is given, much is required.

Perhaps just the joy in your flock of chickens and being able to look out upon your trees will get you through to the time when you do have more time freedom for the more time consuming activities of gardening and canning. That's not giving up on self-sufficiency. SS is an attitude, a mind-set and a way of living. It is not an activity.

I do stockpile some foods, like baking powder and gf baking mixes... things like that. But I'm also working proactively to provide my own ... veggies, fruit, protein sources.

Not expecting a huge single event to prompt the zombies, but do believe that if things continue the way they are, supplies will dry up here and there, semi's will be hijacked, and my chickens will be safely hidden away. Also, we live where there are blizzards, bad roads, constant electrical outages and wildfires.

p.s. I hope people realize that when we talk about "zombies" we don't mean literally. We mean people who haven't taken the time to prepare for a rainy day and will scavenge from anyone and anywhere. I guess we're just making light of it.

I have no respect for the foreign-owned corporations who are dictating public opinion and governmental policy in America. I have no admiration for the typical American lifestyle which is leading to an epidemic of obesity, diabetes, and heart disease. This does not mean that i have no respect for all of my hard working fellow Americans. I just think that they deserve better treatment from the powers that are.

I can see that focusing on making money has some advantages, in your situation. You still have some options on SS stuff too.

Some projects don't take much time, so they might work for you.
Since you already have some fruit trees, you might get a dehydrator and dry some of the fruit. The prep work is easy and quick, then you just check the machine in a day or two to see if they feel "done" yet. If things did get bad enough that you need to sail out- dried foods are light weight and need less room to store -or- carry.

Assembling a bug out bag for each person in the household is worth it. Maybe in backpacks and a rolling cooler can be handy since you could be living on the boat in an emergency.

Self sufficiency is different things to different people. You have to do what is right for you. I used to compare myself with some others here that put in a large garden, do a lot of canning and do their own butchering along with other things. The fact is that at this point in my life, I don't have time to do all that. I'm doing little things to work towards that but between job and other reponsibilities, time is just not on my side and at some point you have to rest. Last year I almost put myself in the hospital from exhaustion trying to do it all. So DH and I decided on what we could do and just forget about doing the stuff that we can't. We will add or subtract stuff as life permits.

Ha! Zombies are real and they will become a real problem in the future! All it really takes is one good superbug or extra powerful Haiti witch doctor and the zombies will come out in force!!
Hmm, maybe it sounds better to use your explanation after all :D

I agree on the weather. We have all of that except the wildfires here. actually, I guess all we really have is the blizzards :) but, I do have inlaws next door with a small stockpile of munitions so, I guess thats ok. Except I'll have to take out the males over there first because they've always said they aren't stockpiling to stay safe, they are stockpiling to take over when TSHTF. Which means, i need to take them out so we don't have to worry about them taking our stuff :D Leeches!!!

How long do the gf baking mixes last btw? We need to seriously stock up on those as well, or create our own I suppose. We don't have pancakes or waffles or bread because they are kinda expensive and we keep running out.

gf baking mixes: depends on when you get them and the expiration printed on them. I've found if they are treated well, they can last an extra year or two after expiration date passes.

Here's a quick one to make yourself: flaxseed, ground. Mix in a little cinnamon, coconut or almond flour, and baking powder. Beat an egg and add, then enough water to make a batter mixture. Cook like pancakes. Delicious! Hey, I should put this on my own thread. Sorry, L.H.
