Friends of mine had raised a squirrel who had fallen out of a nest as a wee one. This thing was raised in the house and had free range. After a year, they started letting it out. This was strange squirrel. It liked some people but went rambo on others.

One day sil and I went over the the friends place and as we were in the barn petting the horses, squirrel came running in--seeing an intruder (sil knew nothing of this squirrel).and started running towards sil. DD and I yelled OH NOOOO!! Sil started kicking.

DD and I yelled at sil to stand still--we freaked her out a little bit to say the least) We didn't know whether the squirrel was going to go rambo on her or not, so best to stay still. The squirrel ran up her pantleg, up her coat , around her shoulders, while sil was just standing there terrified, thinking the squirrel was rabid or something.

Finally squirrel decided she was friend, not foe, and left to harrass someone else. Squirrel did not like my son. My son, on defending himself from rambo actions, booted the squirrel. To this day, whenever we go over there, ds has to look over his shoulder for rambo squirrel.

Shortly afterwards, ds decided that he wanted to go squirrle hunting.

Oh my word.....

OFG- Yea, hubby decided that he wanted it OUT of the house before something out of National Lampoons Christmas Vacation ensued!

My mom kept saying, that squirrel is just so sweet, I really don't think it would bite anyone. In her defense, when we let it out of the crate it stopped right where he got out and let all of us, even my noisy children, pet it. It did seem kind of tame.....my great granddaddy had a squirrel that lived in a tree outside the front porch of his house and he used to keep whole peanuts in his front pocket on his overalls. That little squirrel would climb up his pant leg and dig around in his pocket for that peanut and then sit on his lap and crack it open and eat it!

He would feed that little squirrel all day long if grandma would let him!

awww....

I hate squirrels. There were millions of them in our last home in San Jose. No natural predators, except me. I used to poison them, before any of us or the neighbors got pets. Once they did and we did, I used my screaming voice to scare them away. Our backyard neighbor had a 60' or more pine tree that was home to many squirrel families. Those darn things stripped my fruit trees, dug holes in my grass and potted plants, and raided the bird feeder. I had to give up on fruit trees, bird feeders and had to put wire over newly potted flowers until they grew up a little.

Even so, they are cute.

Aww. Squirrels are cute. Chipmunks are cuter, the little striped rats. I like our chippy condo (aka stone wall patio) out our slider. The chippies seem to think they own the patio.

My all time favorite tame squirrel story- someone posted it on my horse bb when they were debating feeding beet pulp dry/wet/at all. I saved the link to the story because it always makes me laugh out loud.

We have raised and rehabbed several squirrels and we also had one (that came to us as a pinky) that we ended up keeping as a pet for years. Her name was Squee. She stayed in a large ferret cage most of the day, but had the run of our basement and family room every evening. She was very sweet and even smelled good ... like dry leaves.

The only time she was ever a problem with people was one time when my D1 BIL was offering her a cracker. Every time she got close to getting it he got scared and jerked his hand and the cracker away. About the third time she decided he was being mean on purpose, so she jumped on his hand, gave him a nip and took HER cracker! :p

Now on the other side of the coin - I still trap and EAT the lousy squirrels that tear up my fruit trees. :D

Okay, as promised, here are pics. I have created a separate album of pics from this past weekend and will continue to add as our progress continues. There are pics of the menfolk cutting in the driveway and of the pond behind the house and the kids looking for frogs and salamanders at the pond's edge. If you get the time take a look!
