I still had everything for it this time at least. I think I was a little too quick. Just a learning curve I guess. And I really wanted a good night's sleep last night.

I did give him more of the kaolin-pectin too. He sure fights me on that now.

Tomorrow is disbudding day and I see that they all three have little buds growing, especially Buckley. Do you think the disbudding person will be unhappy if I bring a scouring kid? I can probably get him to the point where he isn't dripping poo or anything by tomorrow morning but perhaps she would feel this is contagious?

I don't really know if this seems contagious. His sibling looks 100 percent great. She keeps escaping out of a little hole in the pen and worrying Ginger. She jumped up on my back when I was crouching down examining Buckley. She certainly likes people!

I wonder if I should contact my disbudding lady and let her know about Buckley's condition? I think he needs disbudding the worst of all, his are the biggest.

I could always just leave him in a crate in the car I suppose if she doesn't want to see him. But would that be bad goat etiquette?

Just because I don't think he is contagious doesn't mean she will think so. And what do I know anywho....it is just my hunch because of how different the other two look.

I think you should contact her and give her the low-down on what's been going on.

I'm sure whether or not he's contaigous isn't a concern - she can just disbud him away from her goats. My concern would be the added stress on Buckley. Disbudding isn't really that bad for a normal kid and they bounce right back afterward, but if he's already got an upset stomach I'm not sure if the disbudding will upset him more.

Hopefully someone else can chime in that may have had that experience (disbudding a scouring kid). If not, leave it up to the person doing the disbudding.

Okay I'll send her a note. He LOOKs fine......

Today I'm noticing his stool does seem to have a funky odor.
I'm not feeling well today so that could be why, not that it smells any worse.

I had a heat lamp on his little inside stall and fell asleep when I got a vertigo attack earlier. I woke up a few hours later and he was too warm! I took his temp and it was 104. I think it is because it was so warm in there though. I turned the dang thing OFF like I should have earlier. I left my son "in charge" and he tried to give him his bottle, but he didn't think about how hot that lamp was making it.

Poor son, I was in the middle of baking bread as well as taking care of the baby when I had to hit my bed. I was yelling instructions to Computer Nerd from there.....................

I woke up feeling better and Buckley drank his bottle down really good.....that heat made him thirsty alright. I'm going to take his temp again in an hour. I was cooking the poor guy!

Good luck with the disbudding today! I can't wait for a report!

Sorry you fell ill again yesterday...does the wether have any affect on your vertigo? Sounds like you're getting it often.

Yes, but I always get it often. That is why I'm not working anymore. I've applied for SSI. Cross your fingers for me please, I really need it. Meniere's disease patients often find weather has an effect...Denim Deb notices it too. Generally when there are barometic pressure changes......and it started to snow here today. Snowing hard right now.

Still scouring this morning but he is lively and MAD at me. Doesn't want the bottle, screaming for mom. I'm taking it as a good sign. He does seem to have a funny little shiver now I did not note before. I'm glad a goat expert will get to see him today. She said to bring him.

I'm really looking forward to meeting this person I'll call her O. She is the goat guru around here (although she is about an hour from me). Turns out she is hearing impaired also and is teaching an American Sign Language Bible study. I can't wait to meet her! She also makes soap.

She already gave me tons of local information including people who have mini nubian studs for next year! Yay!

I'm anxious to get out of here, hubby is dragging this morning......sometimes he is such a slow poke I want to scream. :somad

Wow SD - sounds like you found a goldmine for a goat guru! :ya
Hopefully she can figure out what Buckley's issue is. :fl
I think we swapped weather with you - we are getting spring temps and sunshine finally! The snow is slowly melting away and turning the yard to mud. There's always something to slip on :p

It went GREAT! I love my new friend, "O". She did all three.

She thinks Buckley has a bacterial issue. She had a different scour stop there that she gave me...I had to insist on giving her a little extra money for it, but this scour treatment has antibiotic in it. She thinks that will make the difference. She agreed with me that his condition is 7 out of 10, not too terrible, not great. She suggested I keep him really warm today and not go out in that snow. So I'm going to bottle feed him the new stuff for the next 24 hours at least. The does were happy to greet the other two.

After watching disbudding, I think I just may go back to have O do this every year. I took some photos, but she did it very competently, calmly and with NO help. She puts the kid between her legs while she sits indian-style, with the body tucked under her legs. Then she cuts the hair away with scissors, not a shaver. Then she used the Rhinehart x-30. She feels the regular size is best for nigys, not the extra small. She thinks the extra small is too small for even pygmys (she has them, too). I could not tell or understand why she kept going or how many seconds to leave it on, it seemed to be something a little different for each one and each burn We were taking pictures and asking questions, but Hubby was pretty appalled by the burnt hair smell and while he can help me microchip a dog, this made him a little..........pale. It didn't bother me at all....I guess I'm hardened from working in vet clinics too long. But I did not see anyone in videos disbud quite the same way O did it, nor did the vets do it the same. She many many short burns, seven to ten times on each side. What I've seen before was more of a long slow burn and repeat once.

Afterwards they all calmed down immediately. I held Buckley the whole way home to keep him warm and fed him his bottle in the car. He is becoming like my baby. He is very snuggly now. He has yelled louder when I was forcing him to drink his bottle in the middle of the night so his cries during disbudding really did not have a huge effect on me. I thought Hubby and Computer Nerd might cry.....well, not really, but they made terrible faces and I .....didn't. I looked at it as a service we were doing for them to make them have a better life and not be MEAT goats or get strangled in fences or start hurting people and need to be gotten rid of.

O thought I should ask and get 75 apiece for my two little guys, :weee which I'm really pleased to hear. She thought they are really cute! She liked their markings too. She says they look mostly like nigerian dwarfs, especially my doeling, except their ears, especially the boys ears. I thought the boys would be worth less, so I'm pleased to hear that. That would mean I could possibly still come out financially ahead on their expenses! Of course I can't count that chicken till its hatched, but I have not yet spent 150 on them although my day today with gas and morning coffee for everyone was about 60.00. I probably bought 25 dollars worth of extra supplements for the does. My medication and stuff the other day was 45 and I'll have to buy a few more things, but I'll have big bottles of most of this stuff for next year. I almost have the extra grain paid for.
Not BAD I would say.............If I had bought the disbudding tool, I don't think I'd be ready to use that thing until I've watched a few more times. She only charged me 10 for anything after the first one (first one was 15) so that was well worth it. If I just break even here I'll be delighted and at this point it looks like I might and a free doeling and it didn't take me any time at all...........:gig

Thanks again guys for helping me make this possible!

Yay! I'm so glad it went well and you got some advice on Buckley. I have not seen anyone do disbudding like that - but if it works, then that's great!
