Wow, I am sorry about your hen. :hugs You did better than I did. When I culled that bird last moth I disposed of it. I didn't even try to process. Dog food, heck why didn't I think of that.

It is sad but gives you a feeling of satisfaction as well. Doesn't it??

It's hot as heck here as well. About 100 outside and 80 inside. I just can't turn on the AC. I refuse to end up with a high bill.

Oh well, 80's not that bad.

Have a good day.

You all just need a cool room!

When my last kid graduated from high school we re did his bedroom. We tore out the walls, rewired and re-insulated AND when we insulated we did all of the walls. Even the interior ones. At the time I was thinking quiet - no more listening to video games, music or late night TV.

When he moved out a couple of years later, I had a brilliant idea. We turned it into our family room/computer room. Then we bought a window unit air conditioner for that room and now it is our COOL room. Insulated all of the way around the room is VERY energy efficient. Since we have a cozy place to cool down the central air stays OFF. We have it set up so we can even sleep in there on hot evenings. Just got our bill. Keeping cool in there cost us an extra $1 a day. I can even stand that!

Yes, that would be helpful. But this is a brand new home, with the mandatory code of 6" walls (standard is 4"). We open all the windows and even the slider door at 9:30 p.m., turn on two little fans in our bedroom to pull in the cool air, but its not getting down past 68 or 69 at nights recently. Its my first full summer here, and I'm somewhat shocked. Darn it- I tried and tried to tell hubby that I wanted a whole house fan installed so we could pull in the cool air quickly, but no.........

Good job on the hen. Sorry you had to do it, but it takes a lot to cull your own chicken and then process it. At least you have the satisfaction that you didn't waste any of it.

We got the heatwave here also. I spent most of the day inside, pitting little plums to dehydrate in the car. I also made yogurt and a fresh batch of kefir. It is nice and comfortable in the house still. Outside is pretty miserable though.

Weather report for today

Updated: Today
Temperature: 92 F
Humidity: Between 76% and 93%
Wind: 17.0 mph
Wind Gust: 22.0 mph
Heat Index:101 F
Elevation: 980 ft

But at least it is a muggy moist heat!

Sounds like a whole house fan would help a bunch. We have a 1 1/2 story bungalow so we don't have a spot for a whole house fan. We fan cool at night with 3 box fans and 2 little fans. We also have a roof window upstairs, so we open that up turn fans on downstairs and the heat rises up and out.

Your insulation (at least on the outer walls) is better than we have AFTER re-insulation. Now you just need a little energy star window unit for one of the rooms.

Hello, my name is Barbara and I'm addicted to the computer.

Today, we lost power at about 8 a.m. and it just came back on at 3:20 p.m. (20 min ago!!!! ha ha ha). So, as I was without my lifeline, I got alot done. Folded laundry, cleaned one bathroom, hand stitched a couple of things that needed mending, organized the drawers of my sewing desk, handwashed a pillow and three grocery bags (the reusable ones), and spot treated a comforter. Also entertained a friend who drove 2.5 hours this morning to help DH install crown molding on the kitchen cabs (we bought a generator last fall, and got to use it for the 1st time today!)(we had rousing discussions about politics, the economy, and what his vs my crystal ball says for the future of CA and our real estate market).

So, the entire day I was desperate to check email, Facebook and of course this forum. Yes sir, I'm addicted.

Yesterday, I made some delicious banana orange coconut jam. I also organized my jars, rings and took inventory of my lids. I discovered that I have too many rings. Both small and large ones. Since I take mine off after the jars cool, I don't need so many. If anyone would like some rings, large or small or both, in decent shape, speak up and I'll mail them to you. I collected them and various jars from Freecycle over the last couple of years.

Tomorrow, I'm gone the entire day helping our local CSA with their grand opening at their roadfront store. They needed a volunteer, and I'm it!

You wasted your time on a lot of silly nonsensical drudgery. Having a fully charged laptop or in my case a netbook affords me 8 hours of the necessary online computer time needed for a healthy self sufficient lifestyle without having to physically talk to anyone.

You guys are funny but I can totally relate. My lap top is rather old and I don't think the battery will hold a charge. But I do have a little inverter I can plug into a 12 volt lighter socket. Hey I also have one of those wind up flashlights with an adapter so you can wind and charge your cell phone. How much winding do you think I would have to do to run my laptop? Wow, I would really need to be desperate for that.

Thanks for the offer on the rings but I have a gazillion as well. :D

So back to this debate you had with your friend. About the Ca real estate market. Whats the scoop? Things are crawling back up around here. I actually have an appraiser coming in the morning. I am refinancing my house.

Lets hope she is old and blind. :hide
