What's with keeping on the lights for broilers? I'd never heard of that component.
in industrial systems, the extra light is to keep them eating. they won't eat when it's too dark, so the light allows them to really pack on the weight.

A pic of my broody White Rock with her new family of Cornish X chicks! They are thriving well at the moment and are feathering fast and she is one very ecstatic mother~I'm so glad I got them for her...and for us! :drool

Well, in the interest of full disclosure, 50 of them live in my pond.

These meaties are really tanking in the chick feed and are getting pretty feathered out....it may be time to turn them in with the flock soon and let them start foraging outside. I'm amazed at how much they have consumed and am looking forward to seeing how they do on free range conditions.

I'll post pics of their first day on the grass...it should be interesting to see how frantic they are to forage for food.

They get big and ugly real fast...but for now mine are still pretty darn cute. It will be interesting to see how they develop not being confined to a pen. My niece raised some a couple of years ago and they were missing a lot of feathers on their breasts from lying on the ground and not moving about much....they were ugly beasts! :sick

Give me a pretty laying hen anytime! :love

I have to agree, they were adorable in the beginning, all yellow & fluffy. His are doing the same thing, just laying around & wearing the feathers off their breasts. They even lay down to eat :p
They are over double the size of the Red Stars he bought at the same time.

I'm really hoping the beautiful EE I got is a hen. She's burnt orange with blue/grey feather tips :love

She sounds lovely, Noobie...can you post a pic of her? I've only had one EE and she was just a common red color and not real pretty.

Also, if anyone has a good pic of a Speckled Sussex or Partridge Rock hen I would love to see those, as I am getting the same in my chick order in June. Would love to see pics of them as adults!
