Oh great. I have a new batch of chicks that are 2 weeks old. Outside, with mama hen, Lola.
Mama will probably keep them safe. I know our duck Edna wouldn't have let anything near her babies!

Heck, she won't even let ME near them. My first broody didn't care if I picked up a baby. This one not only cares but makes to peck me!

Maybe she WILL protect them. Hope so.

I like snakes, as long as they aren't poisonous, they are so helpful in keeping rodents down. It still startles me if I come across one unexpectedly however. I know they will eat chicks and ducklings and eggs if they can get them, but if you take precautions I think it can be minimized. I'm more concerned about hawks and foxes than I am about snakes. You can also eat snakes-- snake meat is delicious.

chickens will nto only kill snakes, theylle at them too...
generally garter snakes arnt much of a risk even to young chicks, even full grown a day old is already about the size of a garters head and thats their prefered prey size. they do however sometimes go after eggs if theres no other food around, but much prefer lizards, frogs and rodents.

i LOVE none venemous snakes...i find them incredibly interesting, i mean there the only animal that gets to completly refresh itself by shedding its skin in its entirety. the way they feel too, its like silk.
they are pretty interesting creatures if you can get past the horror movie creep factor and realy truly look at them and what they do for the environment.
i even like venemous snakes as long as they keep their distance. they just realy interest me :)
but then again i also love pet rats too lol.
im weird.

Snakes don't bother me, either. Basically, I have a rule for them. You don't bother me or my chickens, I don't bother you. But, get too close, and you will be removed to a different location. (And no, I don't kill them.)

Busy weekend. We finally finally finally did the year's FIRST mowing and trimming of grass and weeds. The goats were super-happy every time the lawnmower bag got emptied on them. (Literally, ON them ... Hawkey our wether refused to move just because more grass was raining down on him!). There's now a clear place to walk from my front yard to the back, perfect for when a customer comes to get her eggs out of my garage.

Haven't seen the snake since last week. HOPE HOPE HOPE that my girls found it and ate it.

But boy howdy am I sore! I haven't mowed since I was a kid. I'm allergic to grass but I knew that if I didn't help, it wouldn't get done. Seriously, Hubby is the slowest person in the world! So I pushed the gas mower while Hubby rode our neighbor's riding mower. Two acres. My son brought us ice water periodically.

Saturday we took a break and went to town for the farmer's market. Bought a few cantaloupe (YUM!) and some huge yellow squash that will be going into the dehydrator. Took the puppy... sure was a HIT with everyone! Bought some much-needed chicken feed and oats at the feed store. Home then back to chores.

But durned if my Husband didn't drive off last night and STILL didn't unload the feed from his car! Guess I'll have to get some more today or tomorrow since he won't be home until late Wednesday night.

OH ... get this! First ever white egg! We bought 2 leghorn chicks in MArch and have been watching them grow up. Not the most personable but are kinda pretty. While sitting out Saturday night getting the puppy used to the chickens, we saw one being "taken care of" by my rooster. Sunday, there was a white egg in the middle of the coop. WOohoo!

This was one of our better weekends. Hubby and Kid getting along much better. Hubby making time to listen to Kid. Was glad about that.

Then I found a HUGE spider while I was moving hay around last night. Ran up to tell Hubby (yes, I'm a big girl) and expected him to come out right away to help me kill it. But no. It was another half hour before he ambled out. Of course, by that time, it was gone. I got ticked. He got ticked. And the yelling commensed.

Hey, at least he didn't take it out on my Kid last night.

First time for everything.

But I now have a huge headache.

Gonna go eat a cantaloupe.
