Thanks for the support and the help.

I don't have any straw yet but have old hay so on Sunday I'll put a thick layer of hay around the seedlings. I don't know how old they are but they are all about 6-8 inches tall with more than 4 leaves. Should work, right? The weather people have now changed their predictions for next week from snow to just cold with rain, high in the 50's. But here in colorado, we've been known to have blizzards all the way through May!

Our last frost is supposedly late May.

I'll plant the strawberries and potatoes in early May. Should have hay by then. If not, I have plenty of bags I could cover them with, in the event of a snowstorm or hard freeze.

Wonder how soon I can start my radishes? Hubby's craving them. Me, I could do without ... but let them go way too long after harvesting time, and it's like eating horseradish! THAT I like!

My son had a 4th kind of seizure last night. I can't find a description for it so can't figure out what it is called. I've left a msg at his neuro doc's office to call me.

He didn't fall down. I have no clue of there was convulsing. He spaced out ... that's how I found him, sitting in his favorite rocking chair in the living room. I got him up, and after many attempts (confusion) got him into bed. Told me about 15 times he had a headache (he couldn't remember telling me.) Gave him his meds and 2 ibuprofen for his HUGE headache, and he crashed. This morning, he has absolutely no memory past getting something to eat, sitting down, and eating most of it. Oh, and he's starving.

Sounds like a tonic clonic (grand mal) without the falling down and possibly the convulsions.

The 3 day hospital stay can't come too soon.

Yikes, that is very scary!! I think I have heard of seizures where the person sort of "freezes" and doesn't do anything, but I don't know anything more than that.
I hope that you are able to get answers soon!!!

see thats me i "freeze" (sometimes i tense up, sometimes im just "spaced out") called absence seizures, they do tend to leave you confused afterwards but are usually very short (most folks are under 30 seconds)...coudl definatly be a more "advanced" absence seizure i know you said hes had absence seizures before where hes been in the middle of something then just knd of "forgot" what he was doing...this could definatly be a stronger form of that.
My absnesces are not "typical" they last anythign from 3-5 minutes (sometimes a little longer though more than 5 mins is rare) and they vary, sometimes its a case of ill be standing there and look like im daydreaming, othertimes every muscle in my body tenses (these are the worse and can leave you with a nasty headache (clentched jaw) and overall general acheyness because its like your muscles experience one big spasam/cramp, and sometiems its anything inbetween)

i hope they can get you some answers for this, with him having so many different types its difficult to even guess at what could be going on, but id say possibly a "severe" absence seuzure.
cant say ive ever been left with the munchies after an absence though lol but i do tend to crave sugars around seizures...
Ive an eplipetic frined who craves anything pickled for about 3 days after a big seizure! everything has to either be picked or drowned in vinegar...

*hugs*

It's been a while since I've posted. Busy busy!

Son's seizures got worse so doctor ordered an inpatient EEG/video monitoring to see if they could isolate where the seizures are coming from. The stay was last week. Checked in, and the EEG specialist started attaching EEG electrodes to his head and 2 to his chest, then wrapped his head in gauze to help keep them in place and to prevent them from getting mixed up and tangled. Then she went to go get her testing equipment. We didn't get past the first test that day.

She had him take a pinwheel (toy) and blow on it for 3 minutes, trying to get him to hyperventilate. He did, and went into a big o seizure: used to be called grand mal, now called Tonic Clonic. First one I'd seen from beginning to end. I noticed the vacancy in his eyes before the specialist saw it on the monitor. I was across the room calling his name before she'd pushed the call button. Within moments, he was flat out, with doctors and nurses teeming around him. He turned blue. Thank goodness we were in the hospital.

Anyway, he had several small and medium seizures during the entire 27 hours we were there. He had so many that they got a good look at what the problem was: a malformation in a certain part of his brain. More testing coming to determine if just developed wrong or is a tumor.

Anyway, patiently (yeah, right) waiting.

Meanwhile, for my birthday that just passed, Hubby got me lots of berry plants: 12 blueberry (various kinds), 4 darrow blackberry, 4 caroline red raspberry, 4 yellow anne raspberry, 1 black beauty elderberry, 2 red reliance grape, and 1 white riesling grape. And paid for the kids to plant them! They are in an aisle between the dog run and the boy goat pen ... someone nicknamed it "Berry Lane". So excited to see them grow and produce.

My doe is pregnant. No clue how far along she is. Put her in with the buck in January but he is still acting like a horny toad so ... no idea. But just since last week she's got sides to her. Woohoo!

Had another doe lined up, but a rogue dog for into their goat pen and attacked most of her herd. Thelma was badly hurt so she was put down. So I'm scrambling to find another doe, preferably one in milk, so we can start having more milk and homemade cheese.

Got some of my garden planted: strawberries, potatoes, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, spinach, chard and lettuce. We're harvesting some lettuce, spinach and chard for a salad tonight. Almost 2 weeks ago I sewed 3 small beds with spinach, radishes and dried peas. The radishes were up this past weekend... woohoo!!

Gonna post this as a separate topic but I'll write it here too: I'm going to be planting lots of trees along both goat pens (one girl, 1 for boys) and wondering what would be best? The thinking is that the trees (planted to the south of the pens) would provide lots of shade, and when it comes time to harvest, the most ripe fruit or nut would fall into the pen and the goats would eat them.

My choices:
-apples
-pears
-almonds
-hazelnuts
-combination thereof

Thoughts?

I guess I haven't written in here for a while, but felt I had to this morning.

Colorado is burning. We've had one fire going since the middle of May, and as of last night, there were a total of 9 wildfires going across the state. The closest to us started yesterday afternoon, about 30 miles south of us. Hubby climbed on the roof with binoculars, and it wasn't difficult to see the smoke. Our poor goats got nervous, and we barely got a pint out of our girl when she usually gives a quart per milking. When we went to bed, that fire was 90% contained. Something happened during the night, probably a bit of wind, and as of this morning it's only 75% contained. We're keeping an eye out on it, and discussed our fire evacuation plan last night. Unfortunately that includes leaving behind all of our critters except for my kid's service dog... no room for goats or chickens.

The temps have been in the 100's for the last 3 days, with 90's being the norm for about a week. We're expecting 100's for today, tomorrow and Wednesday too ... that's 6 days in a row, and a record. Our temp here at the house on the plains was 106 yesterday, and wouldn't you know it, our a/c isn't working. Luckily, it's just a blown fan that should be fixed by tonight. We've put double curtains on all the windows to keep out as much sun as possible.

We desparately need rain ... about 3 days of a steady drizzle would help us greatly, but there's not anything really in the forecast. Feel free to send some! Please?

And unfortunately, Independence Day is next week. That means that even tho there's a complete ban on all fireworks, there is certain to be lots of idiots shooting them off. That only increases the chance of more fires. We've decided to forego watching any public firework displays (that will have fire engines standing by) and stay at home, sprinklers and hoses at the ready.

I have a good friend who lives in Woodland Park ... there's a fire 8 miles from her house. She's on evacuation standby.

Can't imagine having to leave my home and critters to possibly becoming charcoal. Please send good thoughts that we get lots of rain soon, and that these fires are dowsed quickly and safely.

Praying about the situation, I have a friend in Colorado Springs who is under evacuation alert and we've been watching it on the news. Absolutely unbelievable that it sounds like many of the fires were deliberately set :(
