I thought that was a great speech! It isn't any different than what any well meaning parent would tell thier children. It is everything I want my own kids to consider when going through school.
The speech itself is good, and there is no reason to keep kids home that day. It really does seem to be all about the kids, not Obama. I like the way he used his own background, and his wife, to show that if you don't give up, if you just perservere through your situation, you can obtain your dream.

Anyone posting on this thread should read the speech first. That way the speech can be criticized instead of the man giving it.
I did read the speech. Twice.
In and of itself, it seems harmless. For now.
It is the ideals of the man giving the speech, that I have a serious problem with............the "NEW" Democrats.......
If he can give a speech like this, and garner even more followers even more grassroots"organizers"........ what does that do to the FUTURE of this country, when the speaker has ZERO respect for the Constitution of this country?????????

Things that make ya go "Hmmmmm"........

I hear the zero respect for the constitution rhetoric almost as much as the socialism rhetoric. What exactly has he done to indicate zero respect for the constitution. It's very catchy but what does it mean exactly?

yea--zero respect for the Consititution?

Many Presidents have violated the Constitution. So many amendments to the amendments that we have gotten further away from the actual Constitution already!

I would need facts and then would have to see exactly how much "more" he has done than other Presidents.

Here are his comments from back in 2001.

Also, you might want to read the "Culture of Corruption" by Michelle Malkin

Oh and one more thing......just take a peek at how many new gun laws have been proposed by his administration. That in and of itself is a direct attack on the 2nd amendment of our constitutional rights.

From the time I was a kid I was always told by others that Canada would eventually just become an extension of the US. No one wanted that. From what I have read in the last few months however, it seems like the US is becoming so much like Canada it is uncanny:>)
Gunlaws
Healthcare
and a couple of other points I can't remember right now:>)

It ain't so bad, honest:>)

Then it sure is unfortunate and, to quote your original post, "fishy" (which I am applying not to you personally but to everyone who got all up in arms about this in advance), that y'all should have ASSUMED that it was going to be some sort of horrible, immoral, mind-controlling, brainwashing, unAmerican, socialist, communist, Antichrist affair. Eh?

Rather than a civics and responsibility pep talk, which is what a person might reasonably have expected in the first place *anyhow*.

But, anything for a conspiracy theory I guess. I have to say, Obama is at least keeping a lot of people *entertained* and in good supply of blogging topics. Sigh.

Facts please. I'm a little confused. HIS administration would be The President and his cabinet.

I was always under the impression that Congress proposed and passed legislation. You must be talking about some of the proposed bills that have been circulating since Bush was in office. The bills that will never go anywhere because it would be political suicide to pass them. The bills that are proposed to show that certain congressmen are getting serious about gun control after someone goes on a rampage and everyone says "How could that happen?"

A direct attack on the 2nd amendment would be abolishing militias. The 2nd amendment doesn't say anything about gun control one way or the other.

Sorry that's just another right wing talking point with no substance at all.

Morelcabin--Can I point out that you started this thread with a huge list of apparently subversive ways the president was undermining our influence of parents? In fact, this entire thread was so apparently controversial that it disappeared for a few days. Now that you have read the speech, you say "I thought that was a great speech!"

Yikes!

Maybe there would be a lot less division and strife in this county if people would read things first before getting all up in arms based on the blogs, forums and opinions of others before actually reading the material themselves.

As for the message of the speech, it strikes me as ironic that right-winged folks would have a big problem with a speech speaking to personal responsibility and hard work. I thought Obama was all about people "sucking off the gov't tit," so to speak. Egad! It turns out he will be encouraging our children to work hard!

You would think it would be the all-for-welfare liberals who would be keeping their kids home from school...
