Ok, voting NO on Issue 3 too! We do not want a casino anywhere in Ohio.

Agriculture is the number 1 economy in Ohio.

As a result, Out-Of-State-Activists (PETA is one) have targeted Ohio for food safety board. Issue 2 is being called the Safe Local Food issue in the propaganda.

Here in Ashtabula County, where ag is the number 2 economy, some small family farmers are supporting Issue 2. I guess they figure a board of Ohioans would be better than a board made of people who live outside the state.

Personally, I am *against* any such admendment to the State Constitution, although I would certainly prefer a local board to an out-of-state board. But in the end it will be agri-business running the show.

A proposed constitutional amendment in Ohio would create a Livestock Care Standards Board to set enforceable standards for the care of animals raised for food. The Board would be a part of the state's constitution, so there could be no other state laws or regulations set for the care of farmed animals, short of another constitutional amendment.
We will be voting No on Issue 2.

QA Issue 3 is the casino issue. We are voting No also on this issue. Casinos will not bring money to Ohio. ETA: I SEE YOU ALREADY GOOGLED THAT.

We have seen loads of press on issue 3 (gambling), but none on issue 2. Wondered what it was when we started seeing signs to vote no. I think it should be illegal to post a sign without reference to what it is about. I want to drive by the sign for my info. lol! J/K
I looked it up several days ago and the general feeling from blogs was to vote it down. I wondered how those with small farms felt about it and I guess you have answered that question, QA.
I still intend to read it in it's entirety as I always do before voting and decide for myself.

Just for the record, I love our Governor. Compared to that scoundrel Taft we had, he is a good man. Campaigned for him.

sylvie, I think what scares me the most is that this board will put small, barely making it farmers out of business.

Issue 2 isn't the governor's fault. It's the fault of the people who believe giving more control and more say to the government protects us.

kjm, if I'm to understand the part you quoted correctly, the appointed board of 13 members will have the freedom to make all decisions regarding farms and what practices should be in place?

I'm so serious about the leaving the state if it passes, that I spent a good portion of last night planning how I'd move all my poultry and my Alpaca across state lines.

I'm thinking Montana is top of the list for states to move to...........

I need a cattle hauler.

QA, for what it's worth, the HSUS (humane society folks) is against Issue 2 *TOO*! :p

Now, of course that's just because they want their *own* version instead... but it seems to me it makes it a lot less likely to pass. And it sounds like this is part of a big power struggle between the HSUS and Ohio agribusiness, so may not be as easily enacted as one might otherwise think.

While there already ARE laws on the books regarding standards of care for farm animals, I agree that anything further in that regard should be examined very carefully from all perspectives including the small producer's, rather than being shoved through unilaterally by big agribiz.

Good luck,

Pat

The California crazies must be escaping!
Seriously, I too would be very concerned. Am I the only one that thinks farmers large and small are being regulated out of business?

Just another panic to through in. Around here at least there are several family farms ... INCORPORATED family farms.

Just because the family has owned the farm for a long time DOES NOT mean they aren't the same big business commercial guys we are always battling against.

I am afraid those "family farmers" would just be another cute name for big business.

We have a small farm as well, and I do not like the idea of anyone telling me what to do/not to do with my animals. As much as I like my animals, I believe that people's rights come first-animals second. My understanding of this bill is that if it isnt passed then they take it to Washington. This is where is could be federal law then. So, moving to another state wouldnt make any difference. They would be telling you what to do with your animals no matter where you live. I talked to my rep this morning and after talking to him I got on the link to see if I could find the wording he was referencing (I havent found it yet), but he said that basiclly their are people (against the issue) who want everyone to be veg. NO MEAT!!! Are you kidding me? I will be the crazy lady raising broilers in my basement if that happens. As of now I am voting yes for issue 2. I will be calling my rep. back to see why there is a humane society representative on the board.

You know ... this might be related to that so called "fat tax" I have heard about. You know taxing people that are overweight because their health MIGHT impact our society. (Rumors ? )

If they can control all of our livestock, our gardens and our food we won't have to worry about being taxed for being overweight - cause we will all starve to death!
