I could live without tv if I only lived at your house.
hee hee hee hee you know, we barely have time for tv and we sure dont need cable with all this ridiculousness! hee hee hee

golly if Dace were here she's make some comment about the "brown chicken brown cow" channel and it would all go to heck.. D are you out there!??!!??

anyway

yes, BBH, there are less weird meat birds. we really loved the "Red Broilers" from Ideal (the same-ish breed is also called Freedom Rangers). i think their grow out rate wasnt 6 - 9 weeks like the meaties... it was more like 12 weeks. and really - they are a lot like 'natural chickens' but they had huge legs/thighs.. not the huge breasts that the meaties have tho. and of course you can get the 'dual purpose' Rhode Island Reds and Barred Rocks etc.

we stayed away from the meaties for a long time but we finally caved - i think it was Buster's fault - and really, with our milk, i think they are going to end up being a good $$ value.

:)

Aaarrrgh, that reminds me, I still haven't ordered my meaties!! We will be getting a load of heavy laying breed cockerels for a mere pittance, since I got my new old Dutch oven. Did I tell you I have a Dutch oven? I love my Dutch oven!

They sound gross. :/ What are some heritage breed meaties? They aren't as gross are they?

Bald, heavy breathing, fat, lethargic baby birds sounds just NASTY! :sick
They don't get that way, if you pasture them. That is what we do.

And I covet your rocket stove! I gotta make me one of those, eventually. I hope we have a reasonable summer, because I also want to make a solar oven from a cardboard box to try. Even if it is an inefficient use of my time, when I could be buying a can of beans or something. Already cooked. Yum! :D

Hey, I usually burn the xmas tree skeletons that I amass by spring from dragging leftovers from the farm next door, as goatie food. This year I am hanging onto them as rocket stove fuel! I have almost 50! It would be a waste of my time to drag them back. Time that could be spent....um....er....

Huh. :hu

aint that the truth....

i just want to say to all the corporate monkeys who are at the department off site that i DONT have to go to, who apparently are not wasting their time being flown across the country, and are now in cold super-air-conditioned rooms, eating bad rubbery chicken grown by people who know what they are doing and then cooked by other experts, and finally having it thrown down in front of them by effective paid by the hour workers....while they are sitting at a table of people they are paid to work with and desperately trying to make small talk...

TO SUCK IT!

and i'm glad i'm not you. today i played with creepy meat chickens and cuddled my favorite little duck. and i think i got more sun today.

where's my tequila my milkshake needs a little bit of med'cine......
