I'm starting to feel itchy!
aahahahghghghhhhhhhhhh!!! ok now i really am all hopping around! eeeek!

we had a HUGE one on the dog one time. like horrible big. like give you nightmares big. eeeuuuuwweee

hey lala! good to see you
:)

so yeah i think the guineas have a better wrap than the chickens b/c they dont really scratch so you can put 'em in the garden. or because they have a better marketing team.

but maybe the ticks stay away from all the SCREAMING. ugh. golly. i think i'm glad those two are back. i'm still goin' with that whoever guinea-napped 'em got sick of them and dropped them back off.

i think we were the only ones in the state to get the rain - it was perfect timing but wow it was muggy out. ick.

murphysranch - if i were there i'd be in shorts and flip flops and sitting outside in the cool!

whatcha need a guinea for? right now - target practice. but normally for bug control. the dang squash bugs got all my pumpkins last year -- and we usually have a ton of ticks. so far other folks have had bad ticks but us.. we've only a handful.
My sis has lots of guineas. She used to have LOTS of ticks. She thinks it is a good trade. ;) :)

I have always had a lot of trouble with squash bugs as well, but someone on here recommended planting radishes all around the squash and it is supposed to keep them away. I am definitely trying that this year since I can't possibly have guineas where I live.

thanks FF! what a great idea re: radishes.

i've been reading on companion planting and have gone all out this year. it so interesting! i finally got off my wallet and bought a copy of "Carrots Love Tomatoes." all great stuff. i'm starting more herbs this year to help with the bug control, some i've never thought to grow.

and yep hennypenny9... you NW-ers dont have the bugs that we have, for sure. when i first got here i was all "hey whats this weird little spider?".... aaagghghhgh

and you cant kill 'em in the washer/dryer, like lala said. that alone should send you running!

as for now i'm headed out for lots of planting, with a guinea under each arm!

:)

Up and att'em already I see :)

I love Carrots Love Tomatoes! My last year gardening at the old house I used the companion planting method....I was never sure if it was the comp. planting or just a good year, but I had a great garden that year, one of my best.

I hope you weather cools down for you....we are looking at 74 here. Going to the beach! First real beach day of the summer :woot

Companion planting did nothing for me last year. I think my garden was cursed. Hope it helps for yours :fl I am turning to whatever organic pesticides I can find this year, trying to pre-empt the stupid little bugs :rant

hey javamama.. just send in those poopy ducks! or i have some guineas for ya!! ha ha ha ha ha

ok finally i'm sitting down. i think i've been on my feet for 12 hrs straight. and its hot. like 88* hot. blech!

so today:

* get up at "O-Dark Thirty". had first breakfast. CHECK!
* plant a buncha stuff before the sun even clears the trees CHECK!
* kick hubby out of bed early with a warning that "its hotter than hot and only going to get worse".. he was overjoyed. but he got up. CHECK!
* milked hot and stinky goats. no one was happy but Little Nibbles who has decided that being milked is the best thing ever. especially since there are snacks. CHECK!
* put up more fencing to keep chickens out of my new garden area CHECK!
* shoveled out kitchen, had "second breakfast" (these days i'm eating like Hobbits) CHECK!
* back outside to dig out the dirt in half of the goat house. superfun. CHECK!
* getting a ton of tomorrow to fill in the big hole.. PENDING
* shoveled litter out the other half of the goat house CHECK!
* back inside for "Elevensies" (more eating) CHECK!
* worked with hubby to till, hack, burn, and if this doenst work - napalm - the stupid wormwood/artemesia that has infested the stupid daylily beds. whoever planted this stupid stuff should be sentenced to come back and rip it out. SHEESH! CHECK!
* back inside for pre-lunch snack, and start cheese making. CHECK!
* more tilling, amending soil, and various swearing at the heat. CHECK!
* looked adoringly at little ducks CHECK!
* more swearing at the heat. CHECK!
* back inside for lunch (cheeseburgers on the grill!) CHECK!
* canning: 7 qts of stock, picked over 6 containers of food for the cats from stock making, saved one big bowl of chicken for us, more canning tomorrow CHECK!
* mid afternoon snack (coffee ice cream float whoot!) CHECK!

and now i'm ramping up to go outside at 7 and start milking/putting the critters to bed.

forecast for tomorrow: 90* and more of the same. sheesh!

of course i'm too tired to drink and i think i have a sunburn. i wonder if anyone would notice if i just went to bed now.....

happy (productive) saturday!
