we need a fun name for our barred rock. i think it going to be "Mrs. something"... like Mrs Dowlrimple or something like that. she has 4 eggs left but she was up this morning. the little ones are popping all around. they may have started to hatch the day before - but i was too sick to check on her.

a couple of my clucks want to brood right now - of course when we dont have any room at all. chickens! its like they do it on purpose!

happy wednesday everyone!
:)
I like that! I've had two barred rocks and they've been Rocky and Rocky II. Rocky II was supposed to be Ethel, as in Lucy and..., but it never stuck. She was one of my stolen chickens. Yup, I'm a chicken thief. :hide

(i was thinking he was acting decidedly perky because the turkeys are keeping him company. i was starting to think goose love was a fickle thing- especially after reading about OD's escapades- and that Ricky had just forgotten poor Lucy like she was yesterdays news. but now i think it's because he thinks i'm the perfect replacement wife.)
Biblio, I better not hear of any goins on over in your neck of the woods. That gander had good manners when you got him. Get him a playmate.

he's still got pretty good manners, i think he's just going through a "phase." playmates are :fl on their way.

hey bib.b!

one of our younger drakes thought that i was his mate for a couple of days...

i gotta tell you, about 100lbs of snarling, barking, mouth and teeth and a "get away from my momma" attitude taught that poor quacker that i was not, in fact, his mate. at all. now he avoids eye contact.

or get a beatin' stick.

but if he's truly snugly - well then you've got a golden gander. he'll probably change his ways when he gets older tho.

:)

Drakes-schmakes - gander-wanders they won't hurt you too badly even when they are mistakenly amorous. But - NEVER turn your back on a 1500lb holstein cow in heat.....

Yup, I'm a chicken thief.
we may just need to hear more about this... care to elaborate on your thievin' ways?? we need the full story over in your journal please.

so i got my other barred rock moved and she is sitting.. but at this point i dont know if her eggs (under her) are good or not. i'm considering just putting all new eggs under her. chickens are the new wealth, you know
;-)

her arch nemesis, that little banty, is just a bee right in my bonnet right now. ugh! i think i'm going to try and break her broodiness. i have a wire cage that i can put her in... but its so dang hot i'm not sure it will work. drat.

and Mrs. Dowlrimple (new name!) is doing great with her 9 chicks.... they are the dickens. there is one that is just a stunner.... i hope she is a pullet. she has bare legs and tufted ears - and a beautiful color. our main roo, Little Pansy, has feathered legs and we are seeing its not really a plus. so clean legs are really good for us. here is my 'prize winning' chick - i give her a blue ribbon (like javamama's ducks):

so the good news is that i feel better today - the bad news is that The Big Man doesnt. so looks like we are in for another round. we almost have the house shoveled out for my pal to arrive - so yay!

this gal pal is the most "prissy" (and i mean that in a good way), feminine, always put together, never a hair out of place gal ( i know how DID we get to be friends!?!).... so we are going to give her the full farm effect. yay!

i cant wait until i can get her to shout abuse at the pigs. whooot! and i'm gonna take her for a ride in the big work truck.

;-)

Ha! My bestest friend in the whole wide world...I refer to her as my sister because that best explains our relationship and gets me into the hospital overnight without question when she is there...is super prissy. It is a hoot. She won't try my goat's milk, wrinkles her nose at it, but wants fresh eggs and yogurt and such.

The most common greeting I get from her is: Are you wearing THAT??? And I often hear things like....let me do your make-up....you need more than one pair of brown shoes and one pair of black shoes, you know.....I can see the pigs from here just fine.....

Sometimes opposites attract. And we each saved each other's life...literally. A bond that can't be broken.

Have fun with your prissy friend! Don't you love talking about poo and such with them? :D

You can also break up a broody by holding her underside in a tub of cool water. She doesn't need to be immersed, just the part that she warms her eggs with. Sometimes it takes a few tries, but you can also replace the eggs she is sitting on with ice cubes. Anything to get her body temp down to normal non-broodiness.

i HATE real shoes. i mean, they are great in the winter, but from about March to November, i'm in flip flops or bare feet. i figure, poo or not, that's what water hoses are for!
