CrimsonRose, my experience was similar, they did not like my four-teated goat either. Luckily, I still have my sweetie, OFG pointed out that since I'm not a professional goat raiser, and I just want a little milk for my family, that my sweet "mutt" goat (mine ARE mixes) will be just fine. I hope the babies my Ginger are having will be as SWEET as she is because her personality is an A+.
And she looks huge so perhaps she will NEED those extra teats! I never thought of them as a positive, thanks for that thought!

stand back, junior and lemme know you how its done..

ha!

just kidding. we just have to make sure that we report the bad behavior. its SUCH A SHAME that the meanies ruin it for everyone.

it makes me think about bullying - i mean these are ADULTS. i think at some point it goes from bullying to abuse?

me - they can take a swing at me all they want. i'll not only take one for the team... i'll stand up for the new folks. heck, i'll even lean over the plate.
;-)

i just cant get past the elitist attitude - its farm animals people! the one that gets me is the "you dont have enough money for farm animals".. um.. farming and/or livestock ownership have a long and glorious history for providing food and resources FOR POOR PEOPLE. its one of the few ways your can get ahead.

for heavens sakes have they never heard of the good works of Heifer International? those folks change lives of people with a FARM ANIMALS. even if it has 4 teats or bad conformation. whole villages live better lives because of a goat or two.

oh well. hopefully today will be a better day.

as for me. i think i'm making cookies - the rain is about to hit and its gonna be a total wash out. whooot! now... where is my half gallon of whole raw milk from my ratty goats that couldnt POSSIBLY be any good b/c they dont stand in a show ring and i use all these common sense, natural methods.

ha!

happy tuesday everyone!

As for breeding animals, I had someone on BYC give me the business for breeding my Metzer ducks. Metzer does breed very healthy ducks, but they are definitely pet quality. But I specifically bred them for egg laying ability and they sure do have that.

Now I did breed my "sub par" females to a show quality drake. I also bred that show quality drake to a show quality hen.

Guess which hen gave me the most "to standard" duckling? My goofy metzer hen Shelley who only has 1 wing bar, a splotchy bill, and spotted feet. All no no's for a welsh harlequin female. Her daughter, Prairie Dawn, has a perfect dark slate bill, solid dark orange feet, both wing bars, and beautiful white body feathering with black speckles right where they are supposed to be.

I bred Shelley, not only for her eggs, but for her personality. Shelley is wicked smart (for a duck). For some reason every drake we have had is totally GA GA for her. From my geeking on animal mating and selection, this is usually a sign of good genes and/or a good immune system. So while Shelley didn't posses the perfect looks a show ring would want, she does posses personality traits I want to pass on along with good genes that drives the boys wild :D

As for the offspring from my show quality ducks, he is pretty good looking and very to type...but he is a bit of a butthead. Not sure if it is just teenaged hormones or what so he isn't diner yet. It does go to show that having pretty parents isn't immunity from becoming a jerk.

...but in their eyes, these are not farm animals. These are elite show animals. Didn't you know goats only exist for the show ring :D That's where the problems happen - the folks who keep goats to provide for the farm vs. folks who keep them as a reason to live, a hobby, a business, or whatever they get out of it. But the attitude that us who keep farm quality animals are morons is sickening. I will stay out of the line of fire because i don't care to waste my time on a-holes, and gently direct newbies to a friendlier place where people genuinely want to help. :old 'scuse me, I've been in a mood for a few days. :)

as for ducks, I must have gotten incredibly lucky because mine look as good as anything I've seen online and they came from Metzer.

Well Metzer does buy eggs to hatch from show breeders as well as other breeders, so in many cases it is just a matter of luck of what you get. I know of a few show winners that were bought from Metzer and have seen other ducks bought there that I couldn't even guess what the breed was supposed to be. My rule of thumb is that rarer more unpopular breeds are more likely to be true to breed because they are more likely to come from a show breeder. I don't know if this is any help to anyone but I hope it is.~gd
