yep pretty normal. my ladies dont take any of the new roo's very seriously.

your boy will eventually figure it out...and the ladies will give up trying or just run really, really fast!

even Legs, our franken-chicken, gets his way with the ladies. he just waits for one to saunter by and then he grabs her by the comb and wont let go.

Fred's still hanging in there.

Fred wants to move in here...where he can have two of his own Wellie girls, and where I'll protect him from other roos.

FRED LIVES!

Oh man..... I used every excuse in the book NOT to go out and check on him this morning.. I really didnt want to find him, mortal coil shuffled off and all. So finally The Big Man just marched out there... and... he's fine. Well, not great but Fred lives.

One eye is still swollen so we washed him off as best we could without opening up the wounds again. And he doesn't seem to be eating so we gave him a couple of syringes full of doctored up water. I gave him some cracklin's from when I rendered the lard so hopefully he'll perk up.

Big Pansy still is still in his position of Acting Manager and Barnyard Master.

In other news - we are back to the Big Cold. Yesterday it snowed all screamin' day but not much stuck. The young turks and ducks are out today and everyone is enjoying the sunshine.

We had one of the jakes in 'intensive care' in with the hens and Runner. He was accidentally put in with the older turks and they beat the crap out of him so he's be recovering nicely.

I'm telling you, a little bit of warm weather and its a bloodbath out there. All of the poultry has gone mad - ducks, turks, roosters... Its a hard day when the GEESE are the best behaved! I told OD how much I loved him again today. I think I'm making progress.

So glad to hear that Fred lives!! Woohoo! Go Fred Go!!! I have found with my Wellies...my Roos are...well...sissy's! I have 2 roos...so I had to put on in with my "mutt pen" where I have an older 3 or 4 yr old RIR. Boy did that wellie get a lesson in who's who!!!! He lives...because he is WAY faster than the oder RIR.
The other Wellie roo, is in with his girls. He was being a bit rough, in front of me, so I caught him up, to teach him manners. Just holding him while I do chores. Well....that poor guy screamed..and I mean, like I was slowly plucking out feathers one at a time...big old bawlbaby screams...the whole time I held him. Jeesh! So much for "cock of the walk"! LOL

i'm thinkin' that Fred was just too mean to die.....

for a while there we had "Son of Fred" whom i named Hector (after the greek)...who was also the meanest little son of a so and so.

as much as i've grumbled about Fred, he sure is a good rooster. he totally takes care of the ladies, sound the alarm when there is a hawk, gets them in at nite, helps them find food. maybe BP will do all that but until now, he's only had 2 or 3 hens in his harem. we were wondering if Fred was starting to fail and BP took advantage of it or it was really just b/c of the couple days of mild weather.

regardless the next couple days should be interesting. we think that since he made it so far he'll pull thru

:)

My older EE hen "cusses out" my big old rooster when he tries to do the deed. She stands there stompin her feet and screeching at him and then charges him and tries to jump on him or peck him as if to say...."you ain't gettin any of this buddy and I'm gonna thrash you if you keep tryin!"

Yesterday, apparently all of my male runner ducks were feeling frisky as well....I looked out the window and I swear they were all standing in a circle talking to each other strategizing who would get which lady duck as his concubine. They were seriously talking to each other. They looked like they were in a huddle in a football game. Then it was like someone said "break" and they all went running to chase the girls and get some lovin.....crazy birds.

So glad to hear Fred is recovering!
And what is that blinding thing in the sky today! Ow, my eyes! Hope you are getting some sun today too.

By the way - went to the new vet and for the first time in 5 years walked out with a bill under $200 for a routine yearly check on one dog. I told her we only wanted a rabies shot, and that's what got after a quick but thorough exam. No guilt trips, no pushiness, $65 bucks for the whole bill, she was great! :weee
