Hey OFG, tell the big man HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!! I hope it goes better than the last one at the restaurant. I swear, I would have been hard pressed to not slap her, or slip her something in her drink. :p Have "fun" clearing those woods...we are trying to do the same thing...why does it seem EVERYTHING in the woods has stickers?? And, they can move! They run after me and wrap their thorny little hands around my legs every time! Oh, just wait till we get the perimeter cleaned, I WILL have my vengeance...come on goats!!!

We had real HEAT yesterday so I'm out to work on the goat pen before it heats up. I have company coming....talk to y'all later.
Real heat? It was only in the 70's! :p
We had 85, which felt pretty hot after highs of only 63 prior to that. You probably have more cool ocean breezes than I do. I'm on the west side of the state but more caught up in the Cascades, I live on top of one of the cascade mountains.

Happy Birthday The Big Man!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Farmfresh I love the dog pictures. We just plain old fence the pond away from dogs....I've known too may labs. The border collie I have has been known to lay down in a watery gutter with her beautiful flowing white tresses. The lab/pit we had would DIVE underwater at least five to six feet under to retrieve things! That was pretty fun to watch.

It's already 78. At least it is DRY here. I couldn't imagine living in humidity with this heat. Or without wind. We always have a breeze. Sometimes I spray the water bottle at the fans and let it blow back on me LOL.

Happy Birthday to The Big Man ! :celebrate
He needs to celebrate his birthday with all of us and see his Mom on a different day. Like Friday the 13th maybe. Get him one of those drinks with some drunken fruit in it, or a little parasol or something for me.

thanks DL! thanks everyone!

we are all arriving separately (weird schedule) so i asked if i could show up at about 4 and hang off the bar until they get there at 6:30 - and then hand her the bar bill?

apparently i'm not THAT funny today. i thought it was a good idea.

so here is a moral dilemma.......

i've been out weeding in one of the garden beds and in this huge nasty weed i found..... a birds nest. its teeny tiny and has about 6 extra small eggs in it - cream with brown speckles. the nest is only about a foot off the ground and i cant believe its made it this long. i want to use that garden bed...but i guess i dont want the Audubon folks to come and lynch me. and who are we kidding - our Shine, King of Barncats, is gonna get the babies anyway (one of the many reasons we are on the bird watchers Most Wanted list).

i would never just move or toss the nest - but should i just not use that bed for a while? give them a fighting chance? give them a little room?

i was half way thru cutting down the weed that the nest is built on - so i guess i should just leave the rest and let nesting birds lay there quietly? of course there was no momma....and there is a chance that ...gulp....Shine already got the parents.

what to do?

Happy Bday to TBM! June is an AWESOME month for birthdays!!!

If you feel that badly you could stick those eggs under a broody or in the 'bator....at least you can say you tried! :p

Try to keep an eye on it for a few days to see if the parents come back to it or not. Any chance you can plant around the weed nest?

just a thought.

I would pile up some old fencing or barbed wire to keep predators out, and watch to see if mom or dad return. They maybe just out hunting. If they don't come back, there's not much to do but let mother nature and killer cats take there course. I had a similar event. My cat got the nest and babies, and when the birds returned, there was nothing but a pile of twigs. :hit

Plant around it if you can or leave it for a few days and watch to see if mama comes back.
We just accidentally destroyed a mallard nest when we chopped out a bush near the house. There were 10 eggs in it and we know it belonged to the cute ducks we call Romeo and Juliet. Luckily she wasn't brooding it yet and they moved on.
