Man you really have been busy! I can't wait to see everything once it's all done. What kind of space do the turkeys need? DH has been contemplating getting some and I don't know the first thing about turkeys!

Seems like the family has settled down since the niece has moved on. Is that the case?
Yes, I would say that is definitely the case. Even SIL has come out of her shell more since niece has moved on.

My turkeys mostly free range as adults. I lost Lady Clara because she went to setting a nest near the property line between us and the neighbors in the wide open. Lady Aslynn has her nest behind the pasture field, about 30 feet from the duck shed, and is covered under tall grasses.

I have found Gwen laying her egg in the chicken nesting box in the layer coop daily the last few days.

If you want to coop your turkeys, you will need a covered run, because they do like to fly into trees to roost at night. Eventually all my turkeys will be in covered flight pens, but for now, they are free ranging. Lance and Gwen were not happy at all being cooped, so I am thinking if I want them to be eternally happy, I will need to build them such a large run/flight pen that they still have the feeling of free range.

QA - I am glad things have settled down some for you. I would have run down the road ripping my hair out and screaming by now.

You on the other hand seem to handle it all plus get all that wonderful work done.

Everything looks great. :bow

Today DH and I ran to the little village my mom lives in to help one of their friends fix their car. While there, I called about some free rabbits I had found on freecycle...their cage was included and the ad said the cage was 8 foot long, so bring a truck to pick up. Turns out, the people live right behind the high school I graduated from, so we popped over to pick up the rabbits.

The cage was actually divided into 4 cages, just all connected together. The rabbits are 1 pure lionhead and 3 lionhead lop crosses. There is only one female, and she we will be keeping. I mostly went for the cage, as each divider is large enough to house a pair of bantams and has an enclosure that opens from the outside that will work as nesting boxes!!

I do plan to keep the only female rabbit, as she's a beautiful buff color and has long hair...and I am partial to long hair bunnies...The former owner said her name is Bonnie, but I think that might change. The 3 males will be going to Auction on Monday with 3 of my mom's rabbits and 1 of mine.

Here's a picture of the rabbit cage. The rabbits are in there, just hiding. They came with about 20# of food, the cage, feeders, and like new water bottles!!!!!

The black rabbit under the cage is one of my two bucks. Him I plan to keep for breeding, but the other buck is going to auction. I do have Cadbury coming up, too, a long hair buck, whom I plan to use for breeding as well. I am thinking the long haired bunnies to sell, short haired stocky bunnies for the freezer!

We are going to put new legs on the cage and paint it. Dh says it isn't a bad cage, just needs a little repairing because it wasn't maintained well. The current legs are ready to fall off, so Dh wants to replace them with short treated 4x4's. Lucky for us, we have several short 4x4's still in the barn, waiting for a project to be used for. :D

We also plan to build a small lean to off the side of the layer coop so that I can have the cage under a roof of sorts for protection from the elements.

I'm so excited over this find! The potential available to me with this cage is just so wonderful!! Bantam/rabbit housing!! All in one cage!!!!!!!

We used to use rabbit pens of this kind to house bantams when I was a kid.

We did not leave them in 24/7 unless the bird was ill or there were other circumstances. We used separate runs with a little shelter coop kind of like your "A" frames (size wise at least) for the daytime.

How about for a broody hen???? Do you think it would work well for a broody??? I have a silkie setting right now on 14 eggs, mixed eggs, but I'm seriously thinking of stacking the deck on her...moving her tonight and putting 5 Speckled Sussex eggs under her....

Quail, you have done a great job! I can remember when you were just talking about raising all those animals.

You've come a long way, baby! :D
