It sounds like you and dh are a good match, QA - you for the critters and dh for the plants. ;)

Which auction do you go to?

We'll be going to the Carrollton Auction barn, if we take them in. It's only on Mondays, and not sure I really feel like going this week.

Went to the feedstore this morning. He had a HUGE huge huge hanging feeder...for a great price, too, so I got it. I was needing one more hanging feeder as I have 3 coops and only had 2 feeders. I am going to put the new feeder, since it is bigger than my other two, in with my layer flock.

I bought up the feed I'll need to see me into next month. I had wanted to do that earlier this week, but they were in between shipments at the local feedstore, so I had to wait for today. I was tempted to buy out what he had, but decided to hold back and just get what I needed to see me through the next two weeks or so. I didn't want to unload all that feed by myself when I got home, so that weighed in heavily on my decision on how much to get. I also picked up oyster shell and grit, so I've got that to last awhile.

I'm still getting a few eggs every day! :fl that they keep it up! I am hopeful, as we are getting more daylight each day, and getting closer to the warmer months. I am definitely looking forward to when I have more eggs than I know what to do with!

The two new turkeys are fitting in just wonderfully! They have figured out to roost in the coop at night rather quickly, as well. At their old home, they just roosted in trees. :ep Guess it didn't hurt them any, as they survived that for 2 years!

I've already collected an egg out of the quarantine pen where the new chickens are. I was so surprised! I think it is the light brahma who laid it, as it was a pretty brown, and I've never seen a silkie lay one that dark. Those poor chickens don't know how to be chickens! One is definitely crippled, and the rest are terrified of leaving the coop! They have a small run, but they don't seem to realize it is for them to go out in. When we brought them home yesterday, we put them in their own run. Last night they all laid in a heap in the middle of the run to sleep! I had to pick them each up and move them into the coop. It is so heartbreaking.

I'm hoping they come around after a couple days. Several of them seem to be in shock. The pair of brahmas wasted no time waltzing around the run like they own it, and the rooster (haven't named him yet) came running when he saw me putting feed down. He stopped short before getting to the food, and eyed me for a bit trying to decide if I was dangerous or not, I think.

He's a pretty big roo, but hasn't shown any signs of being agressive yet. I hope it stays that way!

I have been coming back to your pics of Lance and I have to admit, I'm jealous. I wish I had a big nice looking turkey like that. :hit

Those poor chickens! They certainly sound like they are in shock... or not very used to people.

We were at our friend's place today and her chickens are not used to people hanging around. They pretty much run to the other side of the hen house when we opened the door.

:ya :ya :ya My chicks are hatching!! My chicks are hatching!! :ya :ya :ya

Not all of my chicks, just the first ones I set...of the 35 original mutt eggs, 26 went into the hatcher! FOUR of those 26 have already completely hatched, and 3 more are pipped!

C'mon chickies!!

My Welsummers (I'm down to 4 Pure Welsummer eggs left out of 9) and my Blue/black/splash/barred Rocks go into the hatcher in 2 more days! Five days from now, HOPEFULLY I will have a Wellie chick or two! :ya :ya

My chicks from Ideal are doing great! I used a little help from them to encourage the chicks in the hatcher out of their shells... ;) When they (eggs) heard the others peeping, OH my did they start a rocking and pipping and then zip zip OUT.

Right now of the mutt eggs, I have one chipmunk looking chick from a brown egg, a yellow EE chick, and 2 yellow chicks from brown eggs.

Eggs number 7, 20, and 35 have pips!! Eggs number 3, 6, 18, and 29 have hatched!

So far today I have collected six eggs. ONE of those was a really nice dark brown, and given the pen it came out of, I suspect Elizabeth (Her Royal Highness) laid her first egg!

WOW you sure are having some egg-citement there, QA! :gig Congratulations!

That would be 6 months 29 days for Elizabeth's age at first pullet egg.
First eggs are great! :celebrate

I think I owe you some credit to my girls (including Elizabeth) popping out eggs! I read what you said you feed yours, so I added those to their diet. Not just to the Fab Five's diet, but to everyone's diet! I've always kept their feeders full, but now their feeders are full and have layer, Flock Raiser, black sunflower seeds, oats, and free choice oyster shell and grit. Plus I give each coop a treat of scratch...but I spread that around the runs so they have to work for it.

Plus they get daily treats of table scraps now, and I bake them up their own batches of cornbread. :p They're all spoiled rotten!

The new chickens today ran to me when they saw me bringing feed to their coop area. I think they are starting to realize I feed them and am not the bad guy :gig

Like I mentioned yesterday, our friend's hens ran to the other side of the hen house and basically ignored us the entire time we were in there. They did not look healthy to me. Many looked like they were feather-picked...which to me says not enough protein in their diet, or boredom. I think that is just sad!

I don't think I did anything except pass along something I read once and filed it away. Then I found that it works for our flock, especially when they can't forage. I have found that in the warmer weather when there are yard yummies for the ladies, they eat less of the purchased feed and the extras. Although I do provide sunflower seeds year round.

If they run to you instead of away from you, I think that is a great sign. Especially since the new ones aren't that used to you. :thumbsup

Most of my chickens, even the LF, try to fly to my shoulder when they see the feed bucket coming. I know it isn't ME they are happy to see! But, I have noticed since having added the oats and black sunflower seeds to their diet, they aren't emptying their feeders.
