Genetics, first and foremost, is my love. I love books involving science and all things human. Sociology is not my thing.
Art books are lovely as well.
Fiction books are nice, but can be tedious.

About Me:

Well, I grew up in the country in Mississippi. I'm a college student. I'm unemployed (unfortunately). I want to better myself and one day, once I have them, make sure my children are prepared for life. I live in a pretty bad neighborhood right now, but I would like to make it nicer here with a garden and some chickens. I was married December 31, 2008 to a great man who, while not wholly supportive of my actions, does think they are quite amusing. Basically he thinks I'm weird and it amuses him. :)

One day I would like to own a goat, some chickens, some rabbits, and ferrets. I love creatures in all shapes and forms and I would love to incorporate them into my life.

Well if you are a chronic learner you have arrived in the right place!

People around these parts can discuss just about any topic you would care to breach and do it with abundant knowledge and practical advice as well! We have had a recent influx of new blood which is a good thing, but there are a lot of old hands around here as well!

I myself have been an urban homesteader for over 20 years. I am a learner as well. I always have my head in some non-fiction book or another. My favorite author is Gene Logsdon. I love his whole attitude about things. JD Belanger and Joel Salatin are right up there as well and I love old AG textbooks from the 1940's they really give a lot of insight into the agricultural mess we have today.

Some on this board are professional farmers or have other professions that are very sufficiency based and some are quite great cooks! There is ALWAYS a good recipe to try out.

I would like to invite you to my website (link at the bottom) since you are interested in possibly having chickens in the future. I have lots of information for people new to poultry and a few "lessons" in homesteading as well.

My husband had the same attitude towards my weird obsession in the beginning, but now he has learned to embrace the benefits of this way of life. It is a learning proposition for them as well!

I wanted to share some pictures. Some of them are projects, some are plants, and some are cats. :)

Gotta show the fluffies off.

Here are my current knitting projects. I would like to learn how to knit with the needles, but I don't have any so can't do that right now.

Here's the crochet work that is going to take me a lifetime to finish. I did add two more rows though. Wooh!

Here's a couple of things I've already knitted. A baby blanket, a baby hat, a toddler hat, a Renee' hat :D, and a scarf that took forever and a few years off my life. Besides my hat, all are available to sell I suppose, so if you would like one just drop me a PM. I can make them in black and red at the moment, but can get more yarn.

My random yard plant. There is a condemned house next to us with a snazzy little tree-thing with berries on it. Well, I ran over and grabbed some and scampered by to my side before the neighbors saw... Not that it would have mattered, but I felt like I was being a bad girl. I maybe stepped over the property line to get them. No biggy. Just ready to see them all grown and pretty. I plan to transplant them later.

My potatoes! Ok, so I had the scheme to start them inside and when it gets warmer, put them outside. This probably won't work, but I had some potatoes handy and wanted to try so what the hey, right? Well right after this I cut them up and are letting them get all callus-y. Hopefully this will be successful. It would save us some money for sure. Any tips on potatoes will be super helpful!

And last, but not least... drum roll... THE KITTIES! May I introduce Loki and Typhon. The kitty wonders!

I'll get some better pictures later, but enjoy for now.

Also, if anyone knows anything about basket weaving, send it my way because I think I have some materials that will work well for it.

Ha, I couldn't think of a better name so I just went with a default one. adding "of doom" makes things sound more ominous and amazing in my opinion. Like if you say "chicken of doom." It's sounds much more exciting than "chicken," even if it actually isn't.

A big welcome from Wa state Queen, great pix.Don't worry about your DH mine is the same way.

I got the biggest surprise last night when he said" you know all that water that runs down the drain when we are waiting for it to get hot?well we should ge a bucket and catch it and use it for other stuff' I almost fell over, so see it takes time but your DH may just surprise you lol.

Have you thought of sell your wares on craigslist or at a local shop,or farmers market. people love handmade stuff.

This is a great group of people and they are all very knowledgeable so stop by often, but remember it is also addicting lol

Welcome QueenRed!! Love your humor!
Love the pics too, your cats are so sleek and pretty looking! I've always liked black cats.

I do want to say though; instead of one goat, you should get.. two!
Goats are herd animals and will do better with at least one other of their own kind.
