I know you are glad that is out (and hopefully never replaced).

Glad DH is working nights too.

My DH works outside all day in this Southern heat and humidity. We are both just glad he has a job but it sure takes it toll on the old man.

I had two bales of salt marsh hay in the garage I never used this past summer, so I put them on top of my carrot/parsnip bed (and worked a bunch around the poor cardoon, we'll see if it makes it up here in the frozen north!). The ground beneath the hay wasn't frozen, and I was able to pull carrots for dinner last night! I'm really pleased that it worked as well as it did, and the carrots were delicious. I get so much satisfaction being able to go into storage and pull out onions and garlic, then go out into the herb garden, shovel off snow and snip fresh thyme (yes, it grows throughout the winter, even under a snow blanket) and whip up a nice dinner! We had thyme-roasted carrots, braised chicken thighs and brown rice. Yummy!

That's awesome, Ann!

We have some large windows that keljonma had given us when she brought down the Ladies. We were going to use them in the coop, but didn't.

Today we were talking about seeing if they're big enough to put over my raised bed.

Wow, the carrots grow without sunlight?

That is cool! Great idea :thumbsup
No, they don't grow, they just store well in the ground :) The hay keeps the frost from reaching them - and believe me, it's been cold here lately, although right now we're in a bit of a warm spell. It's supposed to rain to snow tonight.

Aly, you should be able to start spinach under that window, go for it!

Hey, RB, if you ever think of anything you'd like to trade with me for some of your honey, let me know! We go out "East" now and then, as I have relatives in the Natick area and near the Cape.

Freemotion, sorry I haven't been back to my journal - I'd definitely love to trade, maybe some keffir grains? I live right off Route 3, exit 13, not on the Cape, we're 20 miles north of Plymouth. Anyhoo, let's see what we can work out!

My thoughts turn to spring - and trying to shake this depression that has settled in. I'm not looking for sympathy, just ears. Hubby is unemployed, sort of - he's laid off, with any luck he'll be back to work in April, but I don't trust it. The economy is just so bad. After a year of being sick (it comes and goes) and barely existing at the poverty line I've really been held down longer than I've ever been held down. I can't seem to pull myself up.

I need to start seeds, couldn't buy any new, but I've got lots in the cellar. My garden looked so wonderful last spring, with all the little transplants, I am trying to find the energy to do it again, but it's not there. It needs to be!

I gave a talk at a local science center on Saturday on becoming a beekeeper. It seemed well-received, they've asked me back for Earth Day. They don't pay, but we can sell honey, and we did pretty good in honey sales, enough to do a good grocery store restock over the weekend up in New Hampshire (we shop up there because it's just so much cheaper than here in MA, and we pass through on our way to the house in Maine - which I hope we can hang on to).

We went north to check on the bees up there, and they're booming! We have four hives that are chock-full of bees. Here's the beekeeper and the hives:

The hive in back produced 120 pounds of honey last year! The others struggled, but that's ok, because this season hopefully we'll get 120 pounds from each! :)

The hives here in Hanson died - they had plenty of honey, so we must have miscalculated the mite load going into the winter. We'll be better this season, hopefully, we won't be dealing with sickness like we had to last summer! The hives down here did produce about 300 pounds, plus what we left for them (they need 80-90 lbs themselves). We'll be able to start the packages of bees out on drawn out comb, hopefully we'll get a modest harvest this first season from them. The hive at my mother's house is doing well still, we're going to add another hive over there this spring.

My thoughts are so disjointed - sorry for the ramble, and really sorry for sounding so down. I need to grab my bootstraps and pull them up!

:hugs

I can soooo relate to your issues. We have had quite a struggle here too. We did have money coming in sporadically but now it has nearly completely dried up.

Have you looked into financial help in your community, help with food etc? Church? Have you really talked to friends about what is going on? I know it is hard, but people can't help if they don't know what you need.

You will get thru it, I know how hard it is to shake the funk....I hope the warmer weather helps.

Can you teach Bee classes yourself and charger for them? I bet the group you spoke for would endorse a series of classes if you put something together.
:hugs

Ann your not alone in your deep feelings, infact it kinda seems to be the sign of the times. Soon spring will be here and all of our spirits will lift. Its in times like these when its okay to reach out to friends so you don't feel like your alone or the only one burdened so heavily. Even though these just black/white pixals, remember this to will pass. :hugs The sun is here, the temps are warming, and soon life will be teaming everywhere.

I have plenty of seeds, I will be more than happy to divide mine and ship them to you. PM me a list of seeds you want as well as snail mail addy and I get those to you this week. I also have a couple full packs that I purchased twice (forgot to mark them off my list) I try to keep my left over seeds year to year, but I am frugal so I didn't have any left over from last year sides pumkin, butternut and peppers.

ETA I will barter seeds for honey!!
