My deepest condolences on the loss of your friend. It is NEVER a good time to lose a friend.

As for those names; Sneezy, Sleepy, Bashful, Doc; Dopey;etc. or you could go with Huey, Louey, Dewey (assuming you can tell them a part that well.) My chickens don't have names because I can't tell them apart all that well. I thought about banding them but that seemed rather "egotistical" on my part and they just don't need my "intervention."

By the way I've been wanting to know how folks change the title/subject of their posting if they are the ones who originated it? Any suggestions?

My internet has been down all morning, I realize I'm addicted to it.....I got a few things done around here and now that it is getting hot I'm sipping some koolaide (I know, real exciting) and sitting in the shade.

Still thinking a lot about my friend. Kind of numb I guess. He would be one of the LAST people you would ever expect to drown. It makes me want to take my teenage sons for more swimming lessons. In Los Angeles, we were all fish and everyone can swim well it seems, but here there just isn't as much chance to learn to swim. The ocean is cold, the rivers dangerous and the lakes are pretty but are often either too muddy or too shallow for a good swim. And there are no public pools like there are in California hardly, and very few people have their own pool, so it is harder to teach a kid to swim here. We are near a lake, run-off from Mt. Saint Helens though so it is very very cold year round.

Henry left today and it makes me sad. I know he will do well, but he and I bonded. I always try to shower my own dogs with attention when we are foster-less so I've been making an attempt at that. I was asking myself today how can I possibly feel like there are not many dogs here when I'm sharing just this one ROOM with three, but it does seem that way, with Ellie and Hanna gone and now Henry. We will have to tell AB we are ready for a new dog any time.

They are already lining up a new foster dog, another male. This one is related to Dee Dee, my own dog! His grandpa was her dad. Ridgebacks have different faces but this dog looks a lot like her, so AB and I looked it up and were proud of ourselves for knowing they were related just by looking at them. I'll have to take a picture of them together, but she is shorter legged than normal, has a sleepier look in her eye and is a red wheaten, just like him, and we also could see in the picture he has her health problem too, (lipomas). So I'm not sad at all that this one is coming here, I was interested in him when I first saw his picture on the site. He is also the brother to AB's personal dog so we are for sure not going to let this boy end up in the pound.

Had a quiet day, it is hard not to think of my friend who drowned.....and his family. The newspaper is saying that "everyone" knew him, and I think it is true. He was a very friendly man, a charismatic cop, it is too bad that there are not more like him in the world. Sad that there is now one less. He always made me feel "safe" even though I no longer live in that community, it is still our closest big town. He was in charge of the neighborhood watch group at one point, that is where we got to know him, and he helped teach the Citizen's academy we attended (teaching civilians about the police force). Eventually our neighborhood was "cleaned up" and he went on to be a detective for awhile, and then later became a motorcycle traffic cop, which was his favorite. We used to see him riding around town, smiling. He gave a lot of warnings and not so many tickets. I know that I, for one, remembered to drive slow through town mainly because I didn't want Mike to catch me speeding, it would have been embarassing because he teased me about driving too fast. When I used to drive I had a tendency to kinda do that. We helped him adopt his dog at one point, too, I wonder if the family still has that dog?

I had a huge talk with Trouble today about swimming and safety. He didn't even squirm or get irritated with me; Trouble knew him too and he was strong and muscular whereas Trouble still looks like a boy with skinny arms. I don't think he will be jumping into the Columbia river any time soon, hopefully never.

Now Computer Geek's latest idea is that he doesn't want to move out in August, instead he wants to take a trip to Europe with friends. I think this is a real crappy idea but I'm hoping that the realities of it become too hard and he just changes his mind. It is one of those things where mom telling you not to do something will make you want to do it more. But this young man has been rather sheltered and I can't quite imagine him wandering around Europe with a couple buddies. It might be a good growing-up experience for him, but this is awful timing for a trip overseas with all the world affairs in a muddle the way they are. And if he got into trouble over there, we don't really have anyone in the family who could fly over and help him out except possibly my (unemployed) brother. But I must admit we have not had many vacations or traveled very much, I don't blame a 19-year-old for having a little wanderlust. I don't think he can possibly earn/save enough money to really do it right so I have to hope he changes his mind I guess.

My sister is 30 and still pulls that. She thinks she's going to Germany for a few months (possibly with her kid, possibly with her usual comment that he cramps her style and dumps him on grandparents first).

Computer Nerd is actually a very responsible kid and very sensible, but just not very worldly. And he hates trying strange foods, I cannot even imagine him trying to feed himself over there.
