We have not really figured out how much hay we use, about two bales a month in the spring and fall, summer more like one bale every three weeks, then in winter about a bale a week. But that is just a rough guess, it has varied a lot because the bale size is different and a few bales they refused to eat, and it pretty much became bedding quickly (which did later become mulch in the garden). So it is a little hard to figure. But 30 bales will last us a very long time, we will have more of a challenge making room to store it. We do have a pretty much unused shed, very nicely built, but it is on the opposite end of our property so not very convenient. God only knows why the previous owners decided to build that way down there, we have used it to store sleds and things we use really rarely. It can't be stored their over the winter because we can't get to it, but it will suffice for now as a place to put it.Farmfresh said:Great score on the hay! Horse people and goat people are looking for the same things in hay so that should be a wonderful deal in the future.
How many bales of hay do you feed in a year? When we had all of the horses we had it figured to within a few bales and usually erred on the extra hay side (you can always sell extra hay or use it for mulch). We always tried to have all of our hay bought and barned by the end of July when prices were cheap.
Happy Birthday to Trouble! Knowing lean times is good for kids, it makes them learn to appreciate things more.
I hope you are right that lean times are good for kids. I used to work for doctors and dentists and a lot of their (rich) children were really not nice people, lots of spoiled brats and ....frankly, unhappiness as adults. I think it is harder to raise nice kids when you can give them everything. Needing things makes you nicer. When we lived in LA, we worked really close to the movie studios and knew some people in the industry. Our daughter was just cute as a button as a baby and resembled the kids in that show called Call to Glory, so they were needling us to have her audition as the new younger sibling on the show. We decided against it however, we already knew of mostly unhappy child actors and didn't think it would set her up for a life of happiness (and this was long before the era of Michael Jackson and the many other child stars that have led amazing but tragic lives). But she was such a ham, and now her daughter is just the same, just as adorable. Course I'm not partial or anything.
