Yep, I stacked them in the kitchen so I can lovingly run my hands over them and admire them and plan what I will fill them with!!!

Do they even make glass mayo jars anymore? Will they withstand the pressure canner?

I don't think they make them anymore and yes, they can withstand the pressure canner....at least they do for my mom and I. People always used to say that the pressure they withstood in their original canning would be so great as to weaken the glass, but that didn't make much sense to us....so we use them anyway. My grandmother always did too.

Sometimes I get so weary of what "people, or they" always say.... I just have to see for myself. :p

That's why I love to ask a question here, even though I always google it, too. I find more realistic wisdom here. Mostly "the party line" elsewhere.

And if I let y'all try it first, I won't have to clean a broken mayo jar and watery soup from the bottom of my canner! :D

Are you sure your canning lids won't fit? We canned in mayo jars for years and my mom still does! Mom says she has never had a mayo jar explode or break on her, but has had several "real" canning jars do so.

When my mom comes up this spring, I'm going to have her bring me more of her canning jars......you'll die to hear this......she has several bunches of canning jars in trays next to her "junk pile"(things dad stores just in case he needs them!) in the woods behind her house.

:rolleyes: You must understand that this woman used to can approx. 400-500 qts of produce every summer when we lived off grid....so she has quite a collection. She had already given me some before, but I think I'll scrounge the rest of them.
Bee, I had always used mayo and other jars until I began loosing entire batches. Maybe it is just in our area but many of us noticed the same thing. We culled the mayo and purchased more mason/ball jars. MIL tried different brands of lids and rings,; the rings just spin on the mayo jar and never tighten for a seal.

Could be different brands, maybe. And maybe back in the 50s-70s they were pretty standard and took the rings? We've always used them and found them to withstand the repeated pressure canning much better than regular canning jars. As a matter of fact, Mom's worst canning episode involved a Kerr jar that exploded and threw hot slumgulleon all over her face and chest. It was a horrible burn and she still bears the scars. :(

Yep, I'd read here on this forum about others finding them this way, so I placed a couple ads on craigslist. I warn you, however, that most people don't read well, apparently, as I clearly stated no glass-lid jars, and that was what most who replied had. Someone wanted $20 per case for modern quarts with rings and lids still in the boxes. Sheesh. That is why patience is needed!

Most of the ads in my area are for jars wanted. So get busy! I might make up a few fliers, too. Not sure where to put them, though.

Yikes. My elderly lady friend who gave me about 4 dozen, almost no two jars alike, said that years ago some companies would sell spaghetti sauce and such in actual canning jars to get you to buy their brand, and it worked. She had a bunch that she got that way. I wonder if the mayo jars were the same way, just not Mason or Ball branded.

Modern mayo that I buy does not even seem to be sealed.....well, now they put those tamper-proof inner liners on, but remember the lids with the cardboard liners? Those did not have a vacuum when you opened them. How did the mayo not spoil? Makes me nervous just thinking about it. Glad I have home-grown eggs to make my own mayo.

Hey, free, I scored some more canning jars! The fella that gave me the earlier ones, along with the canner and all the apparati, arrived tonight with a full-sized truck with topper....jam-packed full to the roof with canning jars~some of them had never been opened.

He gave me about half of that truck load, 1/2 pts, pts, and qts. Over 30 boxes of canning jars all together.....which, combined with the previous score, makes about 40 boxes of canning jars of all shapes and sizes(except 1/2 gal~which I would have loved to have!)

He is going to advertise the rest for $5 a box! :)
