Oooooo, jealous!!!! You could can a cow!!! :D
Plan to!!! :thumbsup

Thinking about butchering my own calf this fall...say November. I need some stronger rope and pulleys, but I think I will be doing this myself. I would also like to tan that hide...it will be my first, but I intend to give it a try anyway.

I planned on tanning a goat hide when I was a kid, I wanted to make some great mittens (little goat, not enough for a vest). I spent a long and grossed out afternoon scraping every bit of fat and goo off that hide, stretched it on a pallet, and left it by the south side of the barn to dry. No one told me to hang it out of reach of foxes and coyotes. It was gone by morning.....:(

Keep us posted on your project...

Bee, are you going to try a chemical tanner, or the whole brain kind?

Do the brains! If anyone can, its probably you!

Amos, I don't think I'll do the brains thingy, as the sound of the other methods seem a little quicker and more efficient. I'll probably use the method I described in the Tanning My Hide thread.

Plus...brains are just NOT something I can stand to handle. For some reason they really, really give me the willies and stomach flutters to touch them. I know, I know.....I'm no sissy, but some things really turn me off~like lung butter! You know..that thick greeny-yellow, viscous stuff that people hock up out of their lungs? Can't bear it! :sick

Another SCORE!!!! :weee My folks will be visiting next week, and dad scored about a hundred canning jars and is bringing them for me.....FREE!!!! Some are bale-type glass lid jars, but most are the modern jars. Can't wait for the final count. My counting fingers are twitching! Canning season (for me) is coming soon! September!

What I learned here on ss: Put the word out, and share some jars of goodies, and the jars will come!

I just finished counting.....the first load is in the dishwasher....there are 111 canning jars that I will be able to can in, assuming on final inspection there are no chips and I can get all the ooooold dirt out (ew! dead spiders and mouse turds!! :sick ) Six are two quart jars, I had none of those yet! I won't can in them, but they will be great for food storage and fermenting.

I also got ten of the pint bale-type glass top jars. I love this size for storing herbs and fermented condiments in the fridge.

And three non-canning jars that fit canning lids. I just gave my last available one away last night with fermented salsa in it....never crossed my mind to use a disposable plastic container! :hu I guess even my subconscious mind won't put food into plastic anymore! :p

Now I just have to fill them!! September I get serious!

we get our honey from a local farmers market and they jar in Kerr jars so i have gotten quite a few from him, we always used mayo jars for canning when we were growing up, if it was questionable mom would use the jar for pickles or something water bath canned. I tried the craigs list thing here and i honestly dont think those folks know what brand new jars go for what a bunch of goobs
