I was so relieved. If they hadn't come home before I went to bed, I wouldn't have gotten a wink of sleep. Of all my dogs, only Ellie likes to roam like that. I keep thinking I should intentionally let her out once in a while so she can get it out of her system and learn to stay home, but I'm not sure it would work. She might develop even more of a wanderlust and start trying to get out all the time.

Glad they are back, my two males are wanderers and I had to convince my husband that collars were a good idea just in case the animal control picked them up. That's why they are in a kennel most of the time, supervised romps in the yard only!

Animal control wouldn't be an issue here, but some...uh...less than tolerant neighbors could be. The neighbors I'm thinking of are miles away, but these dogs can really cover ground when they want to. The boys do leave the yard, of course, patrolling for coyotes, etc. but don't go anywhere near any neighbors.

I don't have collars on any of my dogs, due to the deep bush they travel through. I'm concerned they could get hung up on branches, etc. and not be able to get free.

While I was in town yesterday, DH took it upon himself to do some work on our junior buck pen's electric fence. We discovered a short in the line when we moved the two female LGDs over there. We had to move them out of the barnyard because we just got two new does and they're terrified of the dogs. Anyway, when I came home, I stopped to check on the work he'd done and discovered Ellie, the one who took the boys on a hike a couple of days ago, was gone again...and so were the boys.

Much, much later, Harry, the pup, came home but there was no sign of Ellie or Smilie, the adult male. I was a little less worried this time, since they did eventually show up the last time, but when Smilie came home without Ellie, all that changed. I just couldn't see why he would come home without her unless something had happened to her. I stayed up till almost midnight, and still no Ellie. I went to bed with a heavy heart. I was convinced she was gone for good, but prayed hard until I fell asleep.

I went outside the minute I woke up and immediately spotted Smilie and Harry. I was still literally blinking the sleep out of my eyes but I thought I saw a third dog, then suddenly she wasn't there anymore. Was I dreaming? I called her name, walking toward where I thought I'd seen her go behind one of the buildings and but still couldn't see her. My vision is really screwy in the morning, thanks to the chemo, and I was really starting to think I'd been seeing things, then suddenly she popped out from the other side of the building and came running to me.

I thanked God loud and long for bringing her home as I walked her out to the pen where her sister was waiting. First thing after my coffee (oh, and I guess I should get dressed too!) I'm going to go fix that electric fence!

Yes, I agree, getting dressed might be a good idea!

Sheri I am glad you pup made it home ok. What do you think she is up to? Visiting a friend or just our chasing squirrels? Makes you wonder.

I think the getting dressed thing should be optional. I do some of my best work cruising around in my pj's. One of the benefits of not having your neighbors living to close.

PJs, robe with chore coat over that, hat and rubber boots. Come to think of it, that must have been quite a sight! Maybe my birthday suit would have been less of a shock after all.
