Thanks everyone :D

Humidity is something we would have to think about. Hubby and I both came from humid areas and really like the lower humidity in Colorado. I could stand a little more than what I have now, but couldn't go back to being as wet after I shower as I was in the shower. :D

For those who hated Texas, what did you hate about it? Any details?

There's plenty of days I get of the shower, and by the time I'm dressed, it definitely feels like a waste of the water and soap! Good luck in finding your "perfect-for-y'all" spot!

I'm in Va....it's very pretty here and there are lots of farms available still. The more rural counties are pretty and if you stay toward the central/western parts you'll be okay....don't go near the northern part or the norfolk/va beach area....blech.

Rednecks, white socks, and Blue Ribbon beer.

Seriously, though...

Too many Yankee transplants who acclimated to the area, which makes for a deadly mix of Texas territorialism and Yankee rudeness.

You might like Austin, though. The laws are Texas loose, but the area is socially liberal. You can garden almost year round, it doesn't get too cold in the winter, and summers while Texas hot are not as humid as Houston.

The things I hated about Texas:
You can't walk outside barefoot-fire ants will eat you alive.
It's ultra Christian conservative in most areas. When you turn on the radio you're listening to some preacher going on about hellfire or you're listening to whiny country music-those are your choices.
You absolutely cannot live without air conditioning, the heat will kill you.
There's too much of the "sometimes someone just deserves killin'" philosophy. I don't mind everyone and his dog having a gun but it's sort of scary knowing that if you accidentally cut someone off in traffic or say something in a bar you could be laying on the ground in your own blood.
It's been about 18 years since I lived there but it was pretty racist down there when I lived there. Can't say if it is now or not but my daughter still lives there and says with new war on illegals it's pretty scary to be a Mexican down there right now even if your family has been American citizens for generations.
I DID make some good friends down there. People are usually pretty friendly.

Ok so I guess I need to google fire ants. If a decision about where to live is influenced by them.... They must be important.

Fire ants and brown recluse spiders. I have a friend who has a hole in his hip big enough to put your fist in from being bitten by a brown recluse.

Don't forget "stickers", snakes(!)* lots of them, scorpions, mosqitoes, giant flying roaches, angry drivers in giant trucks, hurricanes, the heat and humidity that wont give up for 10 months out of the year, tornados**...

I could go on and on about why I hate Texas... :tongue

*I got bit by a water moccasin when I was a teenager.
**I was also in a tornado. :tongue :tongue :tongue
