Can you keep them in their hut for a couple days so that they "get it". Then let them out to see if they'll go back in by themselves...I had to do that with my chickens a couple times....dang birds wanted to roost in the woods BEHIND the coop. I even had one rooster that wanted to roost on top of the coop.

Also try Pinetree Seeds - www.superseeds.com

They have open-pollinated/heirloom corn, and the only thing their catalog says is "Corn is the one vegetable in the home garden that can benefit with fungicidal treatment if planted in cold, wet, soil. For that reason it is sometimes difficult for us to find un-treated seed of the newer hybrids. Occasionally some of our corn seed with be treated with thiram." Well, and the big disclaimer on the first page that NONE of their seeds are GMO.

Good luck :)

Lori, turkeys just don't get it. They don't go to bed by themselves like chickens. You have to train them. FF uses a broom to encourage them in. She said eventually they see the boom and know.

My cousin calls them in with grain in a can, by shaking it. I have done this a couple times. Usually I just wait until dusk and put feed in their hut. If the tom goes in and starts eating the hens will slowly follow, It's trying all of this after dark that is the problem. I don't think they see me.

I wish could leave them out to roost in the trees, but they don't. I have a huge plum tree. They never go in it. Not sure why.

oh well.

I am cleaning junk drawers this morning. Back to it!!! :woot

Well I just came in from the coops. I let the turkeys out and then headed to the chicken house.

I had a dead hen laying under the roost. :hu She was not that stiff so I say sometime last night. She had no visible issues. Just looked like she croaked and fell into the pine shavings.

Do birds die from old age?

No, I think FF would agree that if she was coming at you with a broom you better be afraid!!!

I just had a nice visit with a friend down at the school. Her dh is working in Co and she and her boys are here. They are going to be moving in the spring. A very hard thing for her. We talked a bit about moving. She said shes not even going to think about it until she has to and she is thinking about using the PODS. I told her about the quote I did on line. Blah blah.. She said she has not done any holiday shopping because she always has her boys. I told her to bring them to my house. Her son and mine are prey good friends. Then the kids can play and she can do whatever she needs to. She seemed surprised that I would offer. :idunno I hope she does come by.

Ok new question.

I went to put the turkeys in their hut and I couldn't find one of my girls. She was over the fence today so I was thinking she was a gonner. I found her on the top roost in the chicken coop. It's been drizzling all day and if you ask me it was a pretty smart place to be. So I moved the feed inside and the other two turkeys followed. So they are all bunking down together tonight.

Is that gonna be a problem? Will the turkey be mean to the chickens? They free range all day together with no problems.

Am I gonna wake up to WW3?
