I spoke with a friend of mine about this today. She kept pointing out that maybe they lost their supplies in the tsunami. I have to give them the benefit of the doubt. There are a lot of people there, maybe some were not so unprepared.

One thing that did come to mind. I know in many European countries they use tank less water heaters. Well I have a 50 gallon tank and its included in my back up supply. Not sure what they use there.

Even though they are inefficient maybe they have a good purpose after all.

I actually watched Glen Beck today. I have to admit I wanted to see what all the fuss is about. I Tivo-ed him. Today was the first show I watched from start to finish. He made some very funny points about how people would be just plain dense to live in Ca. Nuclear energy, earthquakes and all and not prepared for emergencies. He used some different words not so nice ones. :hide But it made me feel better about my efforts.

Look at that beautiful cabbage!

One thought on their preparedness in Tokyo is the amount of space they have in the cities. Many of them have dorm size fridges and everything is much more compact. Not a lot of storage room. Not an excuse for not being prepared but they do have a different culture as far as how big of a living space is considered essential.

When did you plant (or notice it growing ) that cabbage Tanks? It is beautiful!

Does it get to be the "guest of honor" on Thursday with a spot of corned beef?

One more reason I should keep a journal. :he

Last Sept I went out and planted carrots, broc and cauliflower. The carrots took but the others did not. This cabbage is in the broccoli bed. So it was not there in Sept. I know its been there for a couple of months.

I went out yesterday and added a few more cabbage seeds to the bed. It looks like they like it there. One thing my dd pointed out. There is some clover growing under the cabbage. Just a bit. I remember Bee talking about how the clover added Nitrates to the soil. MY yard is now about 70% clover. Anyways, I wonder it the cabbage likes the clover.

Not sure how much longer to let it grow. :idunno It's so darn petty I hate to eat it. But when I look at it all I think about is sauerkraut. :sick

Any suggestions???

That cabbage is beautiful!

I bought a few earth boxes and plan to at least grow a little something....but now I can't decide what to plant! I feel like a little. Kid in a candy store, so many choices and I want to get the biggest bang for my buck!

I agree with Glen Beck....californians are isane. I still wish my DH would entertain the idea of moving..but that is not going to happen.

Happy Tuesday!

Good to see you Dace. :hugs I hope all is well. I am glad you are planting this year. It will do you good to get your hands dirty. ;) I would plant whatever your family likes to eat fresh. Not sure how big your boxes are but go for some green beans, maybe a tomato plant and some salad greens. If you do a mixed greens you can cut and pick and they will come back. And heck green beans grow like weeds if you pick regularly.

Moving huh that's a sore spot. Dh is now working with his Dad again but he know he has a time limit. I am not going to sit here and tread water. He thinks by staying for this year we can better our situation. I see my house value going down. :somad I will make the best of this year and save as much cash as I can. Then next year we will re evaluate. he does want to live simpler life but it's very hard for him to commit.

Nothing new.

The boxes are really small, but much better than pots :). The best part is that there is a reservoir in the bottom for water, so they are semi self watering....and given our climate I hope that helps me to be more successful.
I am definitely planning on green beans and herbs and salad greens and onions probably squash in one....that leaves me with one box to fill. Anyway, I am really looking forward to it!

I hope your hubby is doing well with the new work situation! I know you are not excited about it :hugs

Iodine.
The majority of Americans a very deficient in Iodine, and could use a daily dose of it.
Two methods that work well, are either Lugol's drops, or Ioderal, which is the pill version.
Both can be ordered online for excellent prices.

It's all good Dace. I have to let him exhaust all his options. He will be ready when hes ready. :idunno

BBrooks, I have iodine pills that are designed in case of a nuclear emergency. The jet stream is supposed to hit here tomorrow. I am so on the fence with the "dilution is the solution" line. Pat suggested that the distance between Japan and the west coast is sufficient but I am still worried. Now we have 3 blown power plants, more evacuations and even the Navy is taking caution. How much crud is gonna blow in the air before they warn us? Is anyone near you worried?

At what point are they going to warn us??? How about Hawaii?? Are they having issues at this point. I am contemplating covering my veggies with plastic. They are all very small at this point and it would be easy to staple it over the wood beds.
