Makes perfect sense to me. The way chicken genetics work the boys usually look just like mom and the gals look like dad. I wouldn't be surprised if the green leg chick is a pullet and she might even lay a green or olive egg.

When your typing Rooster and it comes out Roaster would you call that a Freudian slip?? :gig

sorry I'm on a roll.

Now put that roaster on a roll and you're all set!
Seriously, everytime I'm typing fast, at home or work, and I need to type the word children, I automatically type chicken instead. Every single time! What does THAT mean????

Funny Hen. I type Tanks instead of Thanks almost always. :p

Karen at least it's not the green legs!!!

FF I did not realize the genetics worked like that. Very cool. The third chick has hatched. Total little yellow fuzzy butt with the cutest little face.

It is so interesting seeing the mix in these birds. I don't even care if they are all mutts. :love

I hope to wake up to another in the morning. It's such a nice way to start my day. Cleaning the chicken coop is on the list so a chick would help. :sick

That's interesting. Roxi is a mix between an EE rooster and a barred rock hen. Her brothers looked almost like barred rocks. Their legs aren't solid colored, but a mix. She's solid black, and has the green legs. And, her eggs are a greenish brown.

Hen, maybe your children are all chickens?

Yeah, we really see this in our flock. A good portion of our babies have a bantam cochin father (standard sized various mothers  where there's a will...) and they all have the feathered legs. Its really funny, if they have feathered green legs they all came out rooster. And alot of the feather legs came out rooster period. Stupid cochin. :D

That is why the Sex-link sexing (like black sex-links and red sex-links) works so well. They cross a light colored (or barred pattern) hen with a red rooster. All of the boys look like mom and are light colored. Black sex-link chickens are a Barred Rock mom and Rhode Island Red dad and Red sex-link chickens are a White Leghorn mom and Rhode Island Red dad, for example. It also always weirds me out a bit when I remind my self that the sex gene is passed by the HEN, not the rooster. This means there are girl eggs and boy eggs!

Very cool info. Some day when I have control of my birds again maybe I will try to follow some breeding patterns.

But for now here is number 3. I have no idea why the pic is so small. But you can just see the bright yellow fuzz ball in front of momma hen.

so cute!!!!

I am not sure if any more are going to hatch. I was thinking about running to the feed store and buying just a few more chicks to add to ours. Not sure.

Today is crazy work, garden, clean house, grocery shop, laundry day!!

My back and neck hurt and I have not cleaned my coop yet. :th

Maybe I will get to it early tomorrow morning.

It's hot here and I am not getting anything done. Kinda in a lazy mode. It's hit the low 90's here for the past two days. With a hot wind to top it off. :sick

Actually day before yesterday I canned chicken stock. I had to clean out the house freezer it was getting full of who knows what. Actually I do. Ha!, it was 4 roasted chicken carcases. So I made a big pot of stock and ended up with 17 pints. Yum!!

As of yesterday broody hen had only hatched the 3 chicks. I went to my feed store and bought 4 barred rock babies to add. I left the eggs under her. I did not have the heart to pull them yet. So the kids went down at 3pm to see the new ones and there was another hatch. A tiny little black chick. It made it through the night but looks rather frail. So now we have 8. :D I do really need to pull the last 5 eggs.

I was avoiding chores today and did some Internet surfing. I found this blog. It seems to have some good info.

The video on the link page is long but the man makes some good points. Funny it was filmed in 2006.

I did some shopping today. Went to our local Smart & Final. Its a bulk, restaurant supply grocery kinda store. I was drooling over the large stainless pots. bought a new knife, and a couple pantry staples. A person could go way overboard at that store if not careful.

I made an apron the other day. Turned out very cute. Kinda a retro style. More feminine than what I normally make. I was actually thinking that if I made the skirt portion just a bit wider it would wrap all the way around. the skirt was pleated instead of gathered. cut down on bulk. I thought this may be a good solution to wearing skirts but not. Kinda like a pinafore over jeans, Capri's etc..

Ok now I am rambling.

creepy meat birds are creeping along. Not growing as fast as I thought. I might be able to stretch them to 7 or 8 weeks. I guess I should give in and feed them more. :hu

Well I guess I should go do something. Be back later.
