I went out to feed the meaties this morning. One was standing at the opposite end of the run and did not come for food. Not normal behavior. After a bit of closer inspection it seems to have a large bloody mass hanging out it's rear end.

I need to get the kids off to school and then I will deal with the bird.

Should I cull it? Should I make this my first to process? I was hoping for an easier start. :sick

Any advice helpful.

Done.

Ok some things I learned. We made our killing cones out of traffic cones the other day so I thought I would try them out for the job.

1 One of my cones we made is way to big. The bird slid right through.

2. The boning knife that is pretty new still took considerable force to cut the jugular.

3. I think I might make a weight so I don't have to sit there and hold the birds head while it bleeds out.

4. Meat birds are nasty.

Has anyone ever use a surgical scalpel for slicing their necks. I have access to some. Not sure if it's worth the danger of inflicting harm to myself. But I do have those cutting gloves.

Well that was an eventful beginning to my day.

NO PICS?!? What's the matter with you!!!

:p

But seriously, explain the whole need a weight thing to me...I'm picturing you cutting the head off completely and attaching what's left of the neck to a weight...is that right?

No. That's funny!! :p

If you watch some you tube videos it shows when people slice the jugular vein they sit there holding he birds head. To prevent it from flapping.

I have also seen where they use a large hook through the birds top beak. Picture fish hook. Then there is something heavy, sometimes a weighted can attached to the hook. This prevents the bird from flopping is still bleeding head around. With out me having to hold it.

Which to be honest was not that bad. :idunno

Now I just need to get over the guts part. :sick

We just let ours hang out in the cone for a few minutes, lol didn't even think of using a weight. There wasn't any flopping because of the cone.
I don't know about a scalpel Gina - DH just gives it a pretty forceful cut right under the wattles, and we had the knife super sharp.

I'm sure next time the knife will work. I will be more prepared. I was just not sure how hard I needed to push.

And your right I would probably hurt myself with a scalpel.
