We got our meats from Meyer Hatchery. They did pretty well but I think we may need to build another tractor if we do more than 60 this year cause we had some definite bullies in there. That way we can separate the bigger ones from the smaller ones and bump up the feed on the smaller ones. I may try welps this fall. We had to do the smaller ones at 10 weeks old cause they had to play catch up once the bigger ones were gone. I don't know how we'll feed ours this year we may try to rig up some sort of trough feeder on the bottom of the tractor for them out of a piece of pvc. Sure would be easier than having to go inside the pen to feed them.

We also started mixing some cracked corn in with our feed the last 2-3 weeks. We got some good yellow fat on the birds from that....great for stock.

Loved the pics of the kids, btw!!!

Lori whats a Welp?

May 27th.

Wow time is flying. I have been working out in the garden this week. Things are really coming along.

The first box I planted in early March with carrots and beets is almost empty. :D I pulled some whopper carrots yesterday.

I will probably replant next weekend.

I have been trying to carve out some more planting space. We have a circle drive. For years I planted it with everything from flowers to cactus. Nothing really ever took and if it did I let it die. :hide

So I think 2 seasons ago we buried it in mulch. I got a huge truckload free from a tree service. The soil was about 10 inches down.

So a couple days ago I pulled back some mulch to get some ground cherries planted. The soil was beautiful. That got me thinking. :weee

I needed someplace to plant my zucc and squash. With the turkeys in the chicken field the other vines seem to be getting eaten. So this is what I came up with. I am planting right where the normal dirt meets the hill of mulch. I think this will keep the water in as well.

Also there are a couple volunteers in the area. One I believe to be a Rat's Tail Radish but I am not certain.

The other is interesting. Could it be a type of Amaranth?

Great idea for the zukes, I think they will grow well in that spot!

No idea on your "volunteers" but we get the second one around here as well, so I'll be reading along to find out if anyone knows what it is :)

That plant in the bottom picture looks like curly dock to me. Watch out that those seeds don't drop in your garden! Although I believe it is edible at certain stages.

Definitely curly dock (sour dock). Pick it young, and boil it twice, but for heavens sakes don't leave those seed heads in your garden! :)

Thanks you!! Out it goes today!!!!

I have a turkey breeding question for anyone who knows.

I am donating my one eyed Tom to a friends petting zoo. He is very calm and friendly and did his "job" well... But he has a hard time getting around not seeing that well.

So out of this years hatch I plan to keep a new tom.. My son asked me if it was going to be a problem for the young tom to mate with the female hen since they were family. :ep He's in 5th grade and just had his HEALTH class.

Anyways I said it's not a problem for turkeys.

Is it a problem?? Especially if they are most likely going in the freezer?

Just wondering if I need a new Tom.

Thanks, G
